Although Sunnis predom<strong>in</strong>ate, Shiites make up a third of<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Middle East.<br />

An average of 4.1 people live <strong>in</strong> a <strong>Muslim</strong> household from<br />

Middle East.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Middle East are less likely to have a schoolleav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

certificate than other groups. They are also less likely to<br />

be <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment than other <strong>Muslim</strong> groups. In particular,<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong> women from this region have a low rate of ga<strong>in</strong>ful<br />

employment. Around a third of this group receive unemployment<br />

benefit II or social welfare – a higher figure than <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

from other regions of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Middle East have a relatively young age<br />

structure. Almost half of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from this region are younger<br />

than 25; a third are younger than 15. Nevertheless, the tra<strong>in</strong>eeship<br />

rate among <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong> this group is quite low. This is probably<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ked to the relatively low standard of education of this<br />

group.<br />

At a social level they have frequent contact with and are<br />

very open towards Germans.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Middle East consider themselves to be<br />

devout to very devout. A large proportion, and the majority <strong>in</strong><br />

some <strong>in</strong>stances, regularly performs religious acts <strong>in</strong> private.<br />

However, they rarely participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutionalised religious<br />

services or are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> religious organisations.
