Summary and conclusion<br />

For the first time a study is be<strong>in</strong>g presented here that is<br />

not limited to <strong>Muslim</strong> migrants from the largest migrant groups<br />

such as Turkey or former Yugoslavia, but considers people with<br />

a migrant background from almost 50 different countries of<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> with a relevant <strong>Muslim</strong> population. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs show<br />

the need for a differentiated view of the <strong>Muslim</strong> population <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Germany</strong>.<br />

7.1 Summary<br />

Number and structure of <strong>Muslim</strong>s76 The result of the projection based on the MLG survey<br />

and the Central Register of Foreigners is that between<br />

3.8 and 4.3 million <strong>Muslim</strong>s from the countries of orig<strong>in</strong><br />

considered live <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>. In view of the fact that<br />

a total of approximately 82 million people live <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>,<br />

the proportion of <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the total population<br />

is between 4.6 and 5.2 per cent.<br />

If a dist<strong>in</strong>ction is made between Alevis and <strong>Muslim</strong>s,<br />

the group of <strong>Muslim</strong>s totals approximately 3.3 – 3.8<br />

million people and the group of Alevis comprises approximately<br />

480,000 – 552,000 people.<br />

At 63 per cent, people of Turkish orig<strong>in</strong> make up the<br />

largest group of <strong>Muslim</strong>s liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>, followed<br />

by <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Southeast Europe, who account for<br />
