3.4 Citizenship and mode of naturalisation<br />

Almost 40 per cent of the <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>Muslim</strong>s from the<br />

countries of orig<strong>in</strong> covered by this study are German nationals,<br />

and are thus not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> statistics on foreigners (figure 22).<br />

The share of German nationals among the members of other religions<br />

is actually as high as 67 per cent. A substantially greater<br />

proportion of <strong>in</strong>terviewees with a migrant background who<br />

hold German citizenship is to be found among migrants orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from Turkey, Central Asia/CIS, North Africa and other<br />

parts of Africa than among the reference group of <strong>Muslim</strong>s.<br />

The German nationals belong<strong>in</strong>g to other religions among the<br />

migrants from Central Asia and the CIS states are ethnic German<br />

repatriates, large numbers of whom have migrated to <strong>Germany</strong><br />

from these countries s<strong>in</strong>ce 1988 (see Haug/Sauer 2007 for<br />

further details). Among <strong>in</strong>terviewees who have migrated from<br />

Southeast Europe or Iran, no difference apply between <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

and non-<strong>Muslim</strong>s with regard to the share of German nationals.<br />
