<strong>in</strong> the area of residence is also exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the context<br />

of social <strong>in</strong>tegration (section 5.2.5.1).<br />

attachment to <strong>Germany</strong> and the country of orig<strong>in</strong> (section<br />

5.2.6) and attachment to the place of residence<br />

(section 5.2.5.2) are employed as <strong>in</strong>dicators. Naturalisation<br />

is often categorised under this dimension. The<br />

aspect of citizenship and the mode of naturalisation is<br />

considered <strong>in</strong> section 3.4.<br />

5.1.1 Educational level<br />

Education has a major <strong>in</strong>fluence on opportunities to participate<br />

<strong>in</strong> the modern-day knowledge-based society. Analyses<br />

from the microcensus reveal a substantially poorer situation<br />

with regard educational level for people with a migrant background<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> than for people without a migrant<br />

background. A higher proportion of immigrants and their<br />

dependents have no school qualifications or lower school qualifications<br />

than people without a migrant background (Siegert<br />

2008: 47).<br />

School education statistics and various studies show that<br />

Turkish migrants possess a particularly low standard of school<br />

education <strong>in</strong> comparison to migrants from other recruitment<br />

countries. This applies both to school qualifications acquired by<br />

migrants of the first generation <strong>in</strong> their home country and to<br />

school qualifications acquired by second-generation migrants<br />

(Siegert 2008). For the first time, school<strong>in</strong>g and standards of<br />

education are exam<strong>in</strong>ed below for the entire group of <strong>Muslim</strong>
