g<strong>in</strong> covered by this study who have probably acquired German<br />

citizenship by way of the obligation to choose citizenship stands<br />

at between 6 and 14 per cent. The share among <strong>Muslim</strong> children<br />

is markedly higher than among the children belong<strong>in</strong>g to other<br />

religions, at between 9 and 18 per cent. This is presumably also<br />

attributable to the fact that the members of other religions<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude many ethnic German repatriates. Their share is also<br />

higher than among children who do not belong to any religion,<br />

however (cf. German Bundestag 2008).<br />

3.5 Household size and number of children<br />

The household size describes the structure of social relationships<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the family and thus also the family’s social <strong>in</strong>tegration.<br />

At the same time, the number of household members<br />

<strong>in</strong> connection with the size of the home is an <strong>in</strong>dicator of social<br />

<strong>in</strong>equality (Friedrich 2008).<br />

It is apparent that <strong>Muslim</strong> migrants live <strong>in</strong> significantly<br />

larger households than members of other religions and <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

than migrants <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> as a whole. Only 5 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

live <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle-person households, for example, i.e. a very<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imal level of <strong>in</strong>dividualised lifestyles is evident. The share<br />

of s<strong>in</strong>gle households among non-<strong>Muslim</strong>s stands at 11 per cent.<br />

This is comparable with the value which applies <strong>in</strong> general to<br />

migrants <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>. By way of comparison: Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

2006 microcensus 12 per cent of persons with a migrant background<br />

live <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle households, while the figure for persons<br />

without a migrant background stands at 20 per cent (Federal<br />

Statistical Office 2008c: 44, own calculation).<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terviewees from predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>Muslim</strong> countries<br />

live <strong>in</strong> households with an average of 3.6 persons. These house-
