49 per cent. Similar to the responses given to the questions on<br />

religious practice presented above, the non-<strong>Muslim</strong>s state more<br />

frequently than <strong>Muslim</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewees that they celebrate some<br />

religious festivals (22 per cent, as opposed to 12 per cent among<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s). 20 per cent of the <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>Muslim</strong>s and 30 per<br />

cent of the non-<strong>Muslim</strong>s state that they do not observe religious<br />

festivals.<br />

A dist<strong>in</strong>ction between the <strong>Islam</strong>ic denom<strong>in</strong>ations shows<br />

that the Sunnis form also <strong>in</strong> this category the group with the<br />

largest proportion of practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Muslim</strong>s. 79 per cent of Sunni<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewees state that they celebrate the major religious festivals<br />

of their own religious community (figure 33). The majority<br />

of <strong>in</strong>terviewed Alevis (51 per cent) and the majority of members
