The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 25 per cent are unemployed or seek<strong>in</strong>g a job,<br />

however. The relatively high proportion of unemployed/jobseek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s (around 16 per cent) from Central Asia/CIS is <strong>in</strong><br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g with the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g that unemployment benefit II or social<br />

welfare contributes to the <strong>in</strong>come of 52 per cent of households.<br />

As with Turkish <strong>Muslim</strong>s, a household comprises 3.8 persons<br />

on average. Moreover, the average number of 1.7 children<br />

is higher than for the other groups studied.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Central Asia/CIS seem to be very well socially<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong> society and are characterised by a high degree<br />

of openness towards Germans.<br />

Around 86 per cent of this group are Sunnis. Although<br />

they say that they are very devout, <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Central Asia/<br />

CIS barely participate <strong>in</strong> public religious life and they largely<br />

absta<strong>in</strong> from religious practices. They are never members of<br />

religious organisations at all and they are only marg<strong>in</strong>ally active<br />

<strong>in</strong> religious community life.<br />

6.4 <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Iran<br />

Among migrants with an Iranian migrant background<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> less than half profess to <strong>Islam</strong>, which means<br />

that <strong>Muslim</strong>s are a m<strong>in</strong>ority among migrants of Iranian orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

38 per cent of people <strong>in</strong> this group say that they do not belong to<br />

any religious community, mak<strong>in</strong>g this the highest proportion of<br />

all groups exam<strong>in</strong>ed. The number of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Iran is estimated<br />

at between 61,000 and 80,000, with a mean estimate of<br />

70,000. This figure <strong>in</strong>cludes 33,000 Iranian citizens and 37,000<br />

Germans of Iranian orig<strong>in</strong>. This means that around 2 per cent of
