The breakdown of <strong>Muslim</strong>s accord<strong>in</strong>g to religious denom<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

is as follows: Sunnis 74 per cent, Alevis 13<br />

per cent, Shiites 7 per cent, Ahmadis 2 per cent, Ibadis<br />

0.3 per cent, Sufis/Mystics 0.1 per cent and other denom<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

4 per cent.<br />

The Sunnis make up the largest denom<strong>in</strong>ation among<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from almost all regions of orig<strong>in</strong>. <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

from Iran are an exception as 95 per cent of them are<br />

Shiites. Alevis come almost exclusively from Turkey.<br />

The most varied denom<strong>in</strong>ations of <strong>Islam</strong> are found among<br />

immigrants from Turkey. In addition to Sunnis (78 per<br />

cent) and Alevis (17 per cent) there are Shiites orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from Turkey (2 per cent), Ibadis (0.4 per cent), Ahmadis<br />

(0.3 per cent) and Sufis/Mystics (0.1 per cent).<br />

Religiousness and religion <strong>in</strong> everyday life77 Seen as a whole, religion is very important to the <strong>in</strong>terviewees<br />

<strong>in</strong> their everyday life; however, it cannot<br />

be assumed that this applies equally to all migrants<br />

from <strong>Muslim</strong> countries of orig<strong>in</strong>. Rather, a significant<br />

number of non-religious immigrants live <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong><br />

from some regions of orig<strong>in</strong> (Iran, Central Asia/CIS).<br />

The proportion of religious people among <strong>Muslim</strong>s is<br />

high. A total of 36 per cent regard themselves as very<br />

strongly religious. A further 50 per cent say that they<br />
