it is customary to dist<strong>in</strong>guish between different <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

dimensions (Kalter 2008: 21ff). Four dimensions are generally<br />

employed – structural, social, cognitive/cultural and identificational/emotional<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration. Descriptions of the state of<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration based on <strong>in</strong>dicators frequently focus on structural<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration, as sources of data such as the official statistics on<br />

schools and the labour market and the microcensus are easily<br />

accessible (Berl<strong>in</strong>-Institut für Bevölkerung und Entwicklung<br />

2009). All four areas of <strong>in</strong>tegration are covered <strong>in</strong> the project<br />

“<strong>Muslim</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>”.<br />

> The follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicators are used to measure structural<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegration: School-leav<strong>in</strong>g qualifications <strong>in</strong> the<br />

country of orig<strong>in</strong> and <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>, employment rate,<br />

occupational stand<strong>in</strong>g, source of <strong>in</strong>come and dependency<br />

on transfer payments (sections 5.1.1 and 5.1.2).<br />

> Cognitive/cultural <strong>in</strong>tegration centres first and foremost<br />

on language proficiency. In this area, the <strong>in</strong>terviewees’<br />

own assessment of their proficiency <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong><br />

is exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the competence areas of listen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

comprehension, speak<strong>in</strong>g skills, read<strong>in</strong>g skills and<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g skills, participation <strong>in</strong> the nationwide <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

course and successful completion of the <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

course with the “Zertifikat Deutsch” (section 5.1.3).<br />

> Social <strong>in</strong>tegration is measured by reference to membership<br />

of German organisations and organisations<br />

that bear relation to the country of orig<strong>in</strong> (section<br />

5.2.1), <strong>in</strong>terethnic contact <strong>in</strong> the family, at the workplace,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the neighbourhood and among friends,<br />

<strong>in</strong>terethnic partnerships, <strong>in</strong>terreligious partnerships
