Summary and conclusion 327<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewees have a partner without a migrant background,<br />

as compared to 24 per cent of those belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to other religious communities and 18 per cent of those<br />

who do not adhere to any religion.<br />

An analysis of the religious affiliation and denom<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of spouses shows that the partner is almost always<br />

of the same religious denom<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

Most <strong>Muslim</strong>s are also open-m<strong>in</strong>ded when it comes to<br />

<strong>in</strong>ter-religious matters. 65 per cent of s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

can envision a relationship with a person of another<br />

faith, as can 58 per cent of married <strong>Muslim</strong>s.<br />

However, this is not yet realised <strong>in</strong> practice: Despite the<br />

essential will<strong>in</strong>gness expressed to enter <strong>in</strong>to an <strong>in</strong>terreligious<br />

relationship, just 8 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s and<br />

non-<strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terviewed actually marry a partner<br />

with a religion different to their own.<br />

With regard to choice of partner for their children,<br />

almost 80 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s would have no objection<br />

to their son marry<strong>in</strong>g a woman of a different faith.<br />

However, just 63 per cent of the <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terviewed<br />

would f<strong>in</strong>d the same behaviour acceptable for a<br />

daughter.<br />

7.2 Conclusion and start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts for <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

policy<br />

The approximately 4 million <strong>Muslim</strong>s who are estimated<br />

to be liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> are a larger population group than<br />

would be expected based on the number of foreign nationals<br />

from predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>Muslim</strong> countries of orig<strong>in</strong>. This is because
