An <strong>in</strong>ability to write German is prevalent above all among<br />

women from Turkey who belong to other religions (13 per cent)<br />

and such women of the <strong>Muslim</strong> faith (8 per cent). The correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shares <strong>in</strong> all other groups are below 5 per cent (women<br />

from Southeast Europe who belong to other religions 4 per<br />

cent, <strong>Muslim</strong> women from Southeast Europe 1 per cent, <strong>Muslim</strong><br />

women from South/Southeast Asia 2 per cent and women from<br />

Iran 3 per cent).<br />

5.1.3.5 Differences between <strong>Muslim</strong> men and women<br />

A consideration of language proficiency among <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to gender does not reveal any clear disadvantage<br />

for <strong>Muslim</strong> women. While women do show poorer results than<br />

men <strong>in</strong> the category “good” or “very good” <strong>in</strong> all language areas,<br />

the differences here are once aga<strong>in</strong> so marg<strong>in</strong>al that they<br />

cannot be <strong>in</strong>terpreted as <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g a significant difference between<br />

the sexes (table 41).
