and Central Asia/CIS there is a very high proportion of<br />

blue-collar workers among persons <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment,<br />

who therefore have a relatively low occupational<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g; migrants from Central Asia/CIS have the<br />

highest proportion of blue-collar workers.<br />

Among the <strong>in</strong>terviewees from <strong>Muslim</strong> countries of<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> the occupational stand<strong>in</strong>g is closely l<strong>in</strong>ked to<br />

gender and education. Women and people with a<br />

higher level of education are more likely to be whitecollar<br />

workers.<br />

Regard<strong>in</strong>g sources of <strong>in</strong>come there is a clear focus on<br />

ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment; 80 per cent have <strong>in</strong>come from<br />

wages/salaries or self-employment. The <strong>in</strong>come of 20<br />

per cent of households derives solely from transfer<br />

payments. This reveals the <strong>in</strong>creased unemployment<br />

problem among people with a migrant background<br />

and the need for qualification measures that <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

chances on the job market.<br />

63 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s consider their level of proficiency<br />

<strong>in</strong> German to be good, although a quarter state that<br />

their command of German is at best mediocre. One <strong>in</strong><br />

ten regards their proficiency <strong>in</strong> the German language<br />

as poor. 1 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terviewed state that<br />

they can neither read, write, speak nor understand<br />

German.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong> women are more likely than men to state that<br />

they can neither read German (3 per cent) nor write
