203The development of the programmeThe shape of this degree programme is the result of a long standing commitment of Diak toexploring community development work and community based learning. Prior to launchingthe programme a long term process of developing international placement based learning incommunity work had been organised. Before beginning the development of the degree, thestaff of Diak South Järvenpää has been engaged in common training in this area. For severalyears an international intensive programme was organised to gain experience in the methodology.In addition an international adult learning programme has been running under thetitle CABLE (Community Action Based Learning for Empowerment). This has developedand organises training in community based approaches with partners in eight countries.This training has been developed as a model for volunteers and activists in local organisationsas well as for professionals who wish to strengthen their work with this approach. InFinland, a network is being built with professionals, activists, teachers and researchers topromote and support community development work practice, training and research. Thisactivity is also based in Diak South Järvenpää, along with the degree programme. Diak isalso pioneering a new international academy for countries of central and eastern Europe(especially the newly independent states) which will develop education based on the Finnishdegree programme. This programme is being developed in partnership with HelsinkiDeaconess Institute and Silesian Diaconia in the Czech Republic.ConclusionThe new Diak degree programme is an initiative which focuses social service and communitydevelopment degree education on civil society. It is embedded in a process which alsoinvolves adult education, in-service training and network building.
