« La caracteristique prosodique du phonostyle effemine en portugais bresilien, tout comme en
frangais, peut etre consideree globalement comme une amplification des contrastes (Thomas
1991), et cela soit au niveau mélodique, soit au niveau temporel, comme, d'ailleurs, il arrive dans
d'autres styles, comme le snob (Leon & Holder 1971, Leon 1993). » (De Moraes,1990)
“the right hemisphere is specialised for paralinguistic aspects, including information that is
carried in the voice such as the speaker’s emotional state, attitudes, sex, and age (Friederici &
Alter, 2004; Lattner, Meyer, & Friederici, 2005; Poeppel, 2003). One important right hemisphere
contribution to speech perception is the comprehension of emotional prosody; the patterns of
pitch, loudness, and length that signal the emotional state and communicate the emotional
intentions of the speaker. Studies of brain damaged patients (Borod et al., 1998; Bowers, Coslett,
Bauer, Speedie, & Heilman, 1987; Charbonneau, Scherzer, Aspirot, & Cohen, 2003; Kucharska-
Pietura, Phillips, Gernand, & David, 2003; Walker, Daigle, & Buzzard, 2002), perceptual
asymmetries in normals (Bryden & MacRae, 1989; Grimshaw, 1998; Grimshaw, Kwasny, Covell,
& Johnson, 2003; Stirling, Cavill, & Wilkinson, 2000), and neuroimaging research (Buchanan et
al., 2000; Gandour et al., 2003; Mitchell, Elliott, Barry, Cruttenden, & Woodruff, 2003) all
indicate a primary role for the right hemisphere in the comprehension of emotional prosody (for
a comprehensive review see Borod, Zgaljardic, Tabert, & Koff, 2001).” (Grimshaw et
al.,2009:314).
« Darwin (1998/1872) observed that in many species, voice is moreover exploited as an iconic
affective signaling device. Vocalizations, as well as other emotional expressions, are functionnally
used by conspecifics and sometimes even members of other species to make inferences about
the emotional/motivational state of the sender ». (Grandjean et al, 2006:235).
