Peggy & Jackie
sua indispensabile biografia Jackie Coogan, the World’s Boy King.
film? – DAVID ROBINSON
Le Giornate The Giornate has had its star guests in the past, but never anyone quite like Baby Peggy
– who grew up to be Diana Serra Cary, a woman of extraordinary vivacity and charm who knew
Hollywood well in the golden years, remembers with startling clarity, and writes about it all with
precision and grace. Hence we are honoured that she has agreed to be our guest for a second time,
when we present a selection of her films that have resurfaced since last year’s Tribute. We have
“teamed” her in this year’s presentation with Jackie Coogan, Chaplin’s “Kid”, in acknowledgment
that in the early 1920s they were both friends and rivals, as Diana Cary has recalled in her
indispensable 2003 biography Jackie Coogan the World’s Boy King.
Incidentally, not many stars would agree to write their own catalogue notes! – DAVID ROBINSON
The Century Comedies
produttore e sceneggiatore.
105
Max Asher, Joe Bonner, Jack Earle, Inez McDonnell, Fred Spencer e
Blanche Payson.
Vari film di Baby Peggy vennero presentati in anticipo rispetto
all’uscita nazionale in importanti cinema di New York e Los Angeles,
paese.
Happened to Baby Peggy?, di Diana Serra Cary, St. Martin’s Press, New
York, 1996)
The Century Film Corporation was founded in 1917 to produce comedies
starring Alice Howell. By 1920 the studio was best known for its animal
comedies featuring the Century lion,“wonder” dogs, mule, and trick horse.
Century followed a strict “unit” system for the production of shorts. Each
“unit” was built around a star comedian, such as Brownie the dog, and
consisted of a self-contained production crew headed by a director who
also acted as unit producer and scriptwriter. So crucial was the unit director
to the creation of individual films at Century, and so small and
overworked was the studio’s directorial staff, that a director’s disability
during production could mean the cancellation or long-term shelving of a
