“…yesterday Mr.Vidmer, the aviator from Trieste, organized a flight with<br />

his airplane … at first he lifted the airplane up to 150 metres, made one<br />

circle, and then landed. … in the second flight he lifted his airplane up to<br />

500-600 metres. Finally, he made three circles at that height, and landed<br />

with loud cheering of the observers.” Djovani Vidmer (Giovanni<br />

Widmer/Ivan Vidmar, 1892-?) was a pioneer of Slovenian and Italian<br />

aviation. In May 1911 he completed flying school in Pordenone, and in July<br />

that year he flew over Trieste. This brave and fearless young man, after<br />

many achievements in aviation, started a tour of the Balkans (Split,<br />

Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Mostar) in the summer of 1912, with his own<br />

Blériot airplane. Louis de Beery filmed Vidmer`s flight over Belgrade for<br />

producer Svetozar Botoric.This was the first Serbian sports film. Besides<br />

the flight itself, the most memorable shot in the film is the embrace<br />

between Vidmer and the Minister of Education, Ljuba Jovanovic,<br />

surrounded by the people of Belgrade.<br />

The new 35mm safety print was made from the original nitrate negative<br />

in the Reinthaler collection held by Filmarchiv Austria. – ALEKSANDAR SASA<br />

HAGHEFILM/SELZNICK SCHOOL FELLOWSHIP <strong>2005</strong><br />

La borsa di studio Haghefilm è assegnata ogni anno a un diplomato<br />

<strong>del</strong>la L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation che si è distinto<br />

nel corso annuale organizzato dal 1996 alla George Eastman House.<br />

Il vincitore è invitato presso i laboratori Haghefilm di Amsterdam<br />

durante il periodo estivo, e partecipa al restauro di un film da<br />

presentare alle <strong>Giornate</strong> <strong>del</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> <strong>Muto</strong>.<br />

Nel <strong>2005</strong> la borsa di studio è andata a Ullrich Rue<strong>del</strong>, di Francoforte<br />

sul Meno, che dopo aver conseguito il dottorato in chimica presso<br />

l’università di Münster, ha lavorato come consulente freelance per la<br />

Intellectual Property Rights e si è rivelato uno dei migliori studenti<br />

<strong>del</strong>la Selznick School.Alle <strong>Giornate</strong> presenterà le versioni restaurate<br />

di tre brevi pellicole, tutte ricavate da copie nitrato 35mm in vari<br />

stadi di decomposizione e rappresentative di diversi generi: attualità,<br />

The Haghefilm Fellowship is awarded every year to a graduate student of<br />

the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation at George Eastman<br />

House who has distinguished him/herself at the course annually held in<br />

Rochester since 1996. The recipient of the Fellowship is invited to<br />

Amsterdam for a summer internship, during which the student restores a<br />

film to be presented at the <strong>Giornate</strong>.<br />

The winner of the <strong>2005</strong> Haghefilm Fellowship is Ullrich Rue<strong>del</strong>, of<br />

Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Mr. Rue<strong>del</strong> has a Ph.D in Chemistry from<br />

the University of Münster, Germany, 1996, has been a freelance<br />

consultant for Intellectual Property Rights, and was an outstanding<br />

student of the Selznick School. He will present the restorations of three<br />

brief films, all from 35mm nitrate prints in various stages of<br />

decomposition, representing a variety of genres: actuality, animation, and<br />

Questo breve film d’attualità ci mostra la cerimonia nel corso <strong>del</strong>la<br />

quale viene scoperto il monumento in memoria di Jean de<br />

Rochambeau (1725-1807), comandante <strong>del</strong>l’armata di spedizione<br />

francese (1780-82) durante la rivoluzione americana. È il presidente<br />

Theodore Roosevelt che dedica e scopre la statua. Presenziano tra<br />

gli altri i discendenti di Rochambeau e quelli <strong>del</strong> marchese de<br />

Lafayette. La copia reca impresso il logo <strong>del</strong>la Warwick Trading<br />

Company, utilizzato probabilmente per la distribuzione in Inghilterra.<br />

This short actuality film captures the fanfare surrounding the unveiling of<br />

the monument dedicated to the memory of Jean de Rochambeau (1725-<br />

1807), commander of the French expeditionary army (1780-82) during the<br />

American Revolution. President Theodore Roosevelt dedicates and unveils<br />

the statue. Descendants of both Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette<br />

are among the dignitaries in attendance.The print is embossed with the logo<br />

of the Warwick Trading Company, indicating that it was probably used for<br />

La fonte originale, una copia nitrato, è giunta alla George Eastman<br />

House insieme agli altri film dei primordi americani ed inglesi<br />

costituenti la collezione Spoor, ma priva di documentazione. Dalla<br />

copia stessa si sono potute trarre solo esigue informazioni<br />

filmografiche. Non vi sono notizie sull’identità <strong>del</strong>l’autore né <strong>del</strong><br />

paese d’origine o <strong>del</strong>la data esatta di questo piccolo film<br />

d’animazione. Come The Fall of Jerusalem, presentato alle <strong>Giornate</strong><br />

l’anno scorso ed in seguito identificato con il film tedesco Jeremias,<br />

anche A Ramble on Skates with Inky Dink resta per il momento un<br />

mistero. Lo staff <strong>del</strong>la George Eastman House sarebbe grato per<br />

qualunque informazione in merito. Il film è stato preservato e<br />

The original source, a nitrate print, came to George Eastman House as<br />

part of the Spoor Collection of early American and British films, but with<br />

no documentation, and only scanty filmographic information has been<br />

able to be extracted from the print itself. No identifying information as to<br />

the maker, country of origin, or even the exact date of this little animation<br />

film has been found. Like The Fall of Jerusalem, shown last year at the<br />

<strong>Giornate</strong> and later identified as the German film Jeremias,A Ramble on<br />

Skates With Inky Dink is something of a mystery.Any information about<br />
