“…yesterday Mr.Vidmer, the aviator from Trieste, organized a flight with
his airplane … at first he lifted the airplane up to 150 metres, made one
circle, and then landed. … in the second flight he lifted his airplane up to
500-600 metres. Finally, he made three circles at that height, and landed
with loud cheering of the observers.” Djovani Vidmer (Giovanni
Widmer/Ivan Vidmar, 1892-?) was a pioneer of Slovenian and Italian
aviation. In May 1911 he completed flying school in Pordenone, and in July
that year he flew over Trieste. This brave and fearless young man, after
many achievements in aviation, started a tour of the Balkans (Split,
Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Mostar) in the summer of 1912, with his own
Blériot airplane. Louis de Beery filmed Vidmer`s flight over Belgrade for
producer Svetozar Botoric. This was the first Serbian sports film. Besides
the flight itself, the most memorable shot in the film is the embrace
between Vidmer and the Minister of Education, Ljuba Jovanovic,
surrounded by the people of Belgrade.
The new 35mm safety print was made from the original nitrate negative
in the Reinthaler collection held by Filmarchiv Austria. – ALEKSANDAR SASA
A RAMBLE ON SKATES WITH INKY DINK (?, US?, c.1916?)
Re./dir: ?; 35mm, 200 ft., 3’20” (16 fps), George Eastman House.
Didascalie in inglese / English interitles.
d’animazione. Come The Fall of Jerusalem, presentato alle Giornate
l’anno scorso ed in seguito identificato con il film tedesco Jeremias,
anche A Ramble on Skates with Inky Dink resta per il momento un
mistero. Lo staff della George Eastman House sarebbe grato per
qualunque informazione in merito. Il film è stato preservato e
stampato nel 2005. – CAROLINE YEAGER
The original source, a nitrate print, came to George Eastman House as
part of the Spoor Collection of early American and British films, but with
no documentation, and only scanty filmographic information has been
able to be extracted from the print itself. No identifying information as to
the maker, country of origin, or even the exact date of this little animation
film has been found. Like The Fall of Jerusalem, shown last year at the
Giornate and later identified as the German film Jeremias,A Ramble on
Skates With Inky Dink is something of a mystery.Any information about
