Glimpses of some illustrious French personalities of the period: the
culturale e artistica francese.
In ogni
– PHILIPPE ESNAULT
With hindsight, this film figures among the most precious incunabula of
the French documentary cinema. In this two-reel short, young Guitry
filmed several giants of the French intellectual and artistic scene. Apart
from the interest of recording their features on film, Guitry was also
engaging in patriotic propaganda, at a time when this “Parisian” could
have been accused of being a shirker.
Was it Antoine, his friend and benevolent elder, just then making his cinema
debut, who suggested the idea for this film to Guitry? In any case, Antoine
appears in it.There is one moving sequence with him, directing some actors
in Act II of Molière’s play L’Avare (The Miser). And I once published a
photo taken by Antoine in the gardens at Giverny, where we see Claude
Monet conversing with Sacha Guitry. Moreover,Antoine could have obtained
backing from the S.C.A.G.L. to facilitate the making of this film.
Notes:
(1) Loyal to their long friendship, Sacha Guitry organized the famous
“Apotheosis of Antoine” tribute at the Comédie Française in 1941, shortly
before Antoine’s death (1943).
(2) The film was projected as part of a talk Guitry gave at the Théâtre des
Variétés in Paris in November 1915.The commentary later served as the
basis for the witty soundtrack narration Guitry would append to the film,
first in 1939, and then in an extended new 47-minute version of the film
in 1952 (for which Guitry shot new footage, mostly of himself), which was
broadcast on French television in January 1953. – PHILIPPE ESNAULT
