Shigeru Mori, un asso della locomotiva, salva i passeggeri di un treno espresso ed evita un terribile incidente fermando una motrice senza guidatore e senza controllo. Per il suo eroismo e la sua dedizione, egli riceve un premio. Tra i passeggeri c’è Omiyo, un’artista circense con tutta la troupe. Le loro vite si incroceranno di nuovo in un’oscura notte, quando Shigeru la salverà ancora, questa volta dal suicidio. La ospita poi in casa, ed i due finiscono per innamorarsi. Il direttore del circo, che pure è sposato, è pazzamente geloso di Omiyo e la minaccia, deciso a riportarla al suo ambiente. Durante un turno di lavoro di Shigeru, il direttore fa visita alla ragazza e cerca di approfittare di lei. Shigeru, avvertito da Shoichi, figlio del suo padrone di casa, rimane al suo posto di lavoro e continua a guidare il treno, ma ha una strana visione, in cui l’espresso per Tokyo si trova nel bel mezzo di una tempesta. Cosa che accade davvero: i binari vengono coperti da una frana. Shigeru corre a casa, per trovarvi il direttore del circo pugnalato… – GÜNTER A. BUCHWALD Shigeru Mori, an ace locomotive driver, saves the passengers of an express train, averting a terrible accident by stopping an unmanned runaway train engine, and receives an award for his heroism and dedicated service. Among the passengers is Omiyo, an artiste with a wandering circus troupe. Their lives later intersect again one dark night when Shigeru saves her once more, this time preventing her from committing suicide. She stays at his home and they fall in love.The circus ringmaster, although married, is wildly jealous; he threatens Omiyo, and is determined to take her back to the circus. force himself upon her. Shigeru, alerted by his landlord’s son Shoichi, sticks to his post driving the train, but has a strange vision, in which the express train bound for Tokyo is caught in a storm. Which it does in reality: the tracks are covered by a landslide. Shigeru hurries home, and finds the ringmaster stabbed by a knife… – GÜNTER A. BUCHWALD Kaoru Murao, ingaggiato dalle Ferrovie Giapponesi, raccontò le sue esperienze sul set del film in Kinema Junpo (21 febbraio 1929):“Come supervisore tecnico mi sono trovato a gestire scene in cui sarebbero potuti accadere incidenti catastrofici. Va detto che il paesaggio tra Kyoto e Osaka è troppo piatto per fare da set e l’impressione di velocità in qualche modo si perde. Dobbiamo rispettare il lavoro della troupe del film, che è riuscita a mostrare con una moltitudine di locomotive la potente dinamica dei treni, il loro movimento e la loro velocità. Indubbiamente il regista tiene in gran conto il successo commerciale del film.” Il regista Genjiro Saegusa era collega di Kenji Mizoguchi, nato come lui nel 1898. Quando, nel 1925, Mizoguchi dovette interrompere la regia di Akai yuhi ni terasarete (Allo splendore del tramonto rosso) per via di una faccenda amorosa, fu Saegusa a concludere le riprese. Nell’epoca dei “film di tendenza” Mizoguchi passò in prima fila, e Saegusa gli tenne dietro. Come conseguenza del terremoto di Kanto del 1923, lo studio cinematografico della Nikkatsu a Mukojima/Tokyo venne chiuso e il grosso del personale trasferito a Kyoto. Poco dopo, la Nikkatsu spostò lo studio a Uzumasa, che divenne la base per una produzione cinematografica più standardizzata. In qualche modo ciò segnò la prima età dell’oro dell’industria cinematografica giapponese (1925-1935), con registi quali Mizoguchi, Tomu Uchida, Daisuke Ito, Mironu Murata e Genjiro Saegusa. – YONEO OTA (docente all’Università delle Arti Visive di Osaka) Kaoru Murao, hired by the Ministry of Railroads, wrote of his experiences working on the film in Kinema Junpo (21.2.1929): “As a technical supervisor I had to manage some scenes where catastrophic accidents could have happened. Also, the landscape between Kyoto and Osaka as a film location is too flat.The impression of speed is lost somehow.We must respect the work of the film crew – they managed to show with a multitude of locomotives the powerful dynamics of the trains, and their movement and speed. Undoubtedly the director values the commercial success of that film.” Director Genjiro Saegusa was a colleague Kenji Mizoguchi; they were both born in 1898. When Mizoguchi had to stop directing Akai yuhi ni terasarete (Red Sunset) in 1925 because of a love affair, Saegusa finished it. In the era of “tendency films” Mizoguchi stepped to the forefront, and Saegusa followed him. As a result of the Kanto earthquake in 1923, the Nikkatsu film studio in Mukojima/Tokyo was closed, and the main staff made its way to Kyoto. Soon after Nikkatsu moved the studio to Uzumasa, which became its base for mass film production. Girato nel 1917 e completato nel 1918, The Sentimental Bloke (Un tipo sentimentale) uscì in Australia nel 1919; prodotto dalla Southern Cross Feature Film Company, fu distribuito nel paese e venduto in tutto il mondo da E.J. Carroll. Come scrivono Andrew Pike e Ross Cooper nel loro volume del 1980, Australian Film 1900- 1977: “Il linguaggio colloquiale e la spontaneità dell’approccio ai sentimenti romantici ebbero molta presa sul mercato australiano e il film riscosse uno strepitoso successo … Quando, dopo un’accurata promozione, uscì alla Melbourne Town Hall il 4 ottobre del 1919 fece un pienone … La sua popolarità non venne meno con il passare dei mesi ed il film apparve regolarmente nelle sale australiane.” Per l’epoca The Sentimental Bloke batté ogni record d’incassi e, come il poema su cui si basava – The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke di C.J. Dennis –, fu amatissimo dagli australiani. Il regista Raymond Longford e la co-sceneggiatrice (ancorché non citata nei credits) e protagonista Lottie Lyell formarono uno dei sodalizi più importanti e creativi di quei pionieristici anni del cinema australiano, realizzando assieme ben 25 film. In seguito, quello che sarebbe stato il loro lavoro più celebre doveva rimanere nascosto al pubblico fino al 1952, quando un incendio scoppiò in una “film library” governativa dov’era tenuta l’unica copia sopravvissuta del film. Questa venne allora trasferita alla National Library of Australia di Canberra, dove fu visionata da Larry Lake e Rod Wallace, che rimasero sorpresi e colpiti dalle sue qualità artistiche. Ciò li indusse a stampare un negativo da cui ricavare ulteriori copie di circolazione. La National Library diede nuova vita
