Reel 4 (after winning a fortune during the night,Wehrstädt is arrested for
murder when he returns to Bracca’s house to give back the money
advanced to him); middle of Reel 5 (the theatre manager’s frustration at
having to cancel the opening night of Marion’s show). Furthermore, there
are clear indications that the horse racing sequence at the beginning of
the film and the gambling sequence in Reel 4 have been shortened. The
reconstruction aimed to restore all the German titles to their original
position. However, in order to preserve the atmosphere and character of
the original commercial film, titles for which no visual material has
survived have not been included in this restored version. – HORST CLAUS
TRE FILM SERBI / THREE FILMS FROM BELGRADE
JEDNA SEOSKA SRPSKA SVADBA [NOZZE RURALI IN SERBIA
/ A SERBIAN COUNTRY WEDDING] (Svetozar Botoric, SE 1911)
cittadini, intellettuali, scrittori, politici…
In August 1911, film producer Svetozar Botoric took his cameraman Louis
de Beery to the village of Majdevo, some 250 kilometers from Belgrade.
Their aim was to film the wedding of the niece of Botoric’s friend Mihailo
Minic, who was a longtime parliamentary representative of the Radical
party. The film was screened in 1912 in Botoric’s “Paris” cinema in
Belgrade, together with a newsreel about the sinking of the Titanic, and it
represents a unique example of film reportage in early Serbian cinema.
Louis de Beery, an exceptionally talented cinematographer, skillfully filmed
all the important events of the wedding – the bride exiting the house, the
wedding procession on its way to the church, the return home, the wedding
luncheon – for 300 guests – in front of the house, and the celebration, with
the dancing of the kolo, a folk dance. What makes this film important are
the interior shots (very rare in Serbian cinema at the time), as well as the
portraits of the wedding guests, who represent Serbian society of the time:
peasants, citizens, intellectuals, writers, politicians… This “first Serbian
ethnological film” seems to be the most complex film product of the
collaboration of Svetozar Botoric and Louis de Beery.
The new 35mm safety copy was made from the original nitrate negative
in the Reinthaler collection held by Filmarchiv Austria. – ALEKSANDAR SASA
Oltre a film
austriaci, tedeschi e ungheresi, l’eccezionale collezione Reinthaler
comprendeva ben 70 titoli ritenuti perduti e prodotti dai due pionieri
serbi Svetozar Botoric e Djoka Bogdanovic.
