His guests knew that one ofthe burgers was made of horse but not which one.The full results of Saturday’s tasting will not be publisheduntil next <strong>mo</strong>nth.However, <strong>it</strong> was Wa<strong>it</strong>rose which went the distance w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>it</strong>s hand-pressed Aberdeen Angus Steak Burgers. Off thepace, by contrast, was Tesco’s Quarter Pounder BeefBurgers which shared joint last w<strong>it</strong>h Essential Wa<strong>it</strong>roseBr<strong>it</strong>ish Beef Beefburgers.Sir Peter, who cooked the burgers, said he had first tastedhorse 30 years ago and found <strong>it</strong> “qu<strong>it</strong>e delicious”.Concerns about horsemeat entering the food chain werenot just about the possibil<strong>it</strong>y of other contamination butalso about squeamishness about eating something “<strong>mo</strong>stpeople regard as a pet”, he said.Sir Peter served the meat on <strong>it</strong>s own, w<strong>it</strong>h no buns, salador relish. One taster thought the horse burger was“meaty, heavily seasoned, w<strong>it</strong>h nutmeg to the fore”while another found <strong>it</strong> “substantial w<strong>it</strong>h an authenticwhiff of offal”.Sir Peter procured his horsemeat from Exotic Meats, aDerbyshire-based online retailer which imports <strong>it</strong> fromFrance, Spain and Italy.The company, which also sells zebra, bison, impala andcamel, says <strong>it</strong> has attracted thousands of extra vis<strong>it</strong>orssince the horsemeat contamination scandal broke.
