Between the three possible problem-solving techniques found through the analysis,
gaming is chosen as the one that is most likely to address the needed change
in paradigm for the construction industry. Thus, the development of a game to be
applied to initiate such a change is described in the following.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME
The objective of the game is to initiate a change in the current way of thinking in
the construction industry.
The background for developing the game has been a study trip to the Lean Construction
Institute 2 in California, USA where games are often used to illustrate
specific problem areas and the impact that these problems have on the building
process in general.
Existing games where used as inspiration in the process of determining the objective
of the game to be developed. By reviewing the existing games with Glenn
Ballard and Greg Howell different alternatives for developing a new game where
discussed. Inspired by “The Parade of Trades” that shows that reliability is impor-
2 The trip took place from February 27 th to March 18 th 2002.
