Actual recycled % Collected for recycling %
Figure A Collected for recycling and actually recycled 15 for a mixed catchment area (% of total household waste
amount incl. the separately collected waste fractions for recycling, which otherwise would have occurred in the residual
waste.
In the scenarios 2Z and 3Z, the various dry fractions and the organic household waste are all source
separated in bags with different colours, which are brought to a bag sorting plant applying optical
sorting equipment. The organic household waste from this plant is sent to an Aikan AD plant, thus
scenarios 2Z and 3Z are comparable with 2A and 3A. The bag sorting equipment has a sorting
efficiency of 95% (giving a lossof5%), therefore even though the collection for recycling is the same,
the actual recycling is lower for 2Z and 3Z than for 2A and 3A.
In scenarios 5, 6 and 7, the waste is collected in 2-compartment bins having source separated paper
in one room and source segregated co-mingled cardboard / carton / plastic / metal in the other
room. The scenarios 5 and 6 have in addition 2-compartment bin for source separated organic
waste and residual waste. Scenario 5 with central sorting of both materials and the dry residual
fraction has the highest actual recycling rate, which is 4 % points higher than scenario 6 with central
sorting of materials only.
Environmental Assessment
The total potential environmental impacts of each scenario are presented in milli person equivalent
(mPE) 16 per ton of household waste, where negative numbers represent an environmental saving (a
positive environmental effect). It is very important for the results that marginal electricity is
assumed produced at coal-fired condensing power plants and that the marginal heat of the
catchment area is assumed to have a fuel and emission composition similar to the average Danish
district heating system as well as havingfull utilisation of the heat produced. It is also importantthat
facilities for waste incineration, recycling and new production is assumed to be located in Denmark,
Sweden or Germany, and that these systems are effective and have only little negative
environmental impact.
15
Metal separated from the incineration slag counts as "actually recycled" but not "collected for recycling".
16
1 PE corresponds to an average annual per capita environmental impact in the environmental impacts
category, which in most cases in this report is calculated as the load from one European in reference year 2004.
