Environmental savings per ton of recycled material are highest for aluminum in all the
environmental impact categories except from photochemical smog. Iron, paper and plastics also
contribute to significant savings per tonnes of recycled material, especially for global warming. The
treatment of organic household waste in manure-based AD facilities or waste incineration plants
results in approximately the same numbers as for global warming. For nutrient enrichment,
however, incineration is better (see also footnote 6). For the recyclable waste fractions, that could be
used for energy production in waste incineration plants (especially for CO2-neutral fuels such as
paper and cardboard), the potential environmental savings from incineration of the different waste
fractions are not explicitly shown in the report, as the scenarios are not designed to compare
recycling and energy recovery for specific individual waste fractions.
Figure C
Potential toxic environmental impacts of the 13 scenarios for one mixed catchment area.
All scenarios show small resource savings for each of the resources coal, natural gas and oil, iron,
aluminum and phosphorus corresponding to 0 mill. to 11 mill. person reserves / ton household
waste. 19
Resource savings of phosphorus from the application of anaerobic digested, source separated
organic household waste is approx. 0.35 kg phosphorus / ton household waste corresponding to
approx. 650 tonnes phosphorus/year for Denmark (out of a total of approx. 1,050 tonnes of
phosphorus in the total volume of organic household waste).
Economic Assessment
The socio-economic assessment includes costs of collection (bag consumption, capital for and
maintenance of bins, collection and transport, and information), operation and capital costs for
facilities for central sorting, anaerobic digestion and waste incineration, income from the sale of
energy (equivalent to the avoided energy production from i.e. coal), dry materials and
digestate/compost, environmental costs of national and international air emissions (valuation
projected for 2020), as well as tax distortion loss from financing renevue effect. A green field project
is applied including all costs of establishing a treatment plant. The investments are depreciated over
a 8-25 years period depending on the type of installation.
Person reserve determines the amount of a given resource available globally for an average person and its
descendants.
