Ilezekiah (Uzziah), and Josiah : and also some <strong>of</strong> the wicked judges<br />

and <strong>of</strong> the kings who obtained disgrace and condemnation in the<br />

cause <strong>of</strong> their being thus under censure and condemnation from<br />

God was that they did not understand that it was their duty to care<br />

for the Divine law, nor that they were bound so to do, or if they did<br />

understand it, that they neglected the care they ought to take on so<br />

understanding it. If we seek to know the history <strong>of</strong> the Gentile<br />

nations, we shall find there that the same cause led them to give<br />

the obedience and the honour due from them to God to false gods, viz.,<br />

ignorance and carelessness concerning the Divine law, and the will<br />

<strong>of</strong> God, on the part <strong>of</strong> princes, and that although straying from and<br />

ignorant <strong>of</strong> the Divine law, they had respect and great honour to
