Ordinary Mon-Annam Words.<br />

But not merely is <strong>the</strong>re this close correspondence<br />

in structure : <strong>the</strong>re is a very large common element<br />

in <strong>the</strong> vocabulary itself. The number <strong>of</strong> words in<br />

Sakai and Semang which can be traced in <strong>the</strong> Mon-<br />

Annam languages (and in some cases also in Nico-<br />

barese, Khasi, and Munda) is very considerable, and<br />

includes many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important words <strong>of</strong> every-<br />

day life. It would be impracticable to set <strong>the</strong>m out<br />

I have illustrated this connection,<br />

here at length ; and<br />

as fully as circumstances permitted, in <strong>the</strong> Comparative<br />

Vocabulary. But <strong>the</strong> following list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> names<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body will serve as a<br />

specimen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent to which this common element<br />

runs through <strong>the</strong> ordinary speech <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tribes :
