Ab<strong>and</strong>onment As a general legal term,<br />

ab<strong>and</strong>onment is the surrender,<br />

relinquishment, disclaimer, or<br />

cession of property or rights. In<br />

medical law, ab<strong>and</strong>onment is the<br />

physician’s unilateral refusal to<br />

continue treating a patient with<br />

whom the physician has a physician–<br />

patient relationship.<br />

Action A civil or criminal proceeding in a<br />

court of law, a lawsuit.<br />

ACOG American College of Obstetrics <strong>and</strong><br />

ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act<br />

of 1990.<br />

Adjudication A decision by a court of law or an<br />

administrative law judge.<br />

Ad litem (Usually attorney or guardian ad<br />

litem.) A person, usually an attorney,<br />

appointed to protect the rights of a<br />

minor or an incompetent who is<br />

involved in a legal proceeding. An<br />

attorney or guardian ad litem’s duty<br />

is limited to issues that arise in the<br />

legal proceeding. The usual role of<br />

the attorney or guardian ad litem is to<br />

ensure that the parents or legal<br />

guardian do not put their interests<br />

before the child or incompetent. See<br />
