MINISTRY OF POWER<br />

POWER GRID CORPORATION OF INDIA LTD<br />

<strong>Power</strong> Grid Corporation <strong>of</strong> India limited (POWERGRID)<br />

was incorporated on October 23, 1989 with an authorized<br />

share capital <strong>of</strong> Rs. 5,000 Crore as a public limited<br />

company, wholly owned by the Government <strong>of</strong> India.<br />

POWERGRID started functioning on management basis<br />

with effect from August, 1991 and it took over transmission<br />

assets from NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO and other Central/<br />

Joint Sector Organizations during 1992-93 in a phased<br />

manner. In addition to this, it also took over the operation<br />

<strong>of</strong> existing Regional Load D espatch Centers from CEA, in<br />

a phased manner, which have been upgraded with State<br />

<strong>of</strong>-the-art Unified Load Despatch and Communication<br />

(ULDC) schemes. According to its mandate, the<br />

Corporation, apart from providing transmission system<br />

for evacuation <strong>of</strong> central sector power, is also responsible<br />

for Establishment and Operation <strong>of</strong> Regional and National<br />

<strong>Power</strong> Grids to facilitate transfer <strong>of</strong> power within and<br />

across the Regions with Reliability, Security and Economy<br />

on sound commercial principles.<br />

Based on its performance POWERGRID was recognised<br />

as a Mini-ratna company by the Government <strong>of</strong> India in<br />

October 1998. POWERGRID as the Central Transmission<br />

Utility <strong>of</strong> the country, is playing a major role in Indian <strong>Power</strong><br />

Sector and is providing Open Access on its inter-State<br />

transmission system.<br />

ACHIEVEMENTS OF POWERGRID<br />

As on December 2005, POWERGRID is operating around<br />

54,800 ckt. kms. <strong>of</strong> transmission lines along with 93 Substations<br />

with transformation capacity <strong>of</strong> 54,350 MVA. With<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> modern state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art preventive maintenance<br />

techniques, average availability <strong>of</strong> transmission systems<br />

during the year 2004-05 was maintained above 99%.<br />

Based on its network size and operational efficiency,<br />

POWERGRID ranks among one <strong>of</strong> largest and bestmanaged<br />

transmission utilities in the World. POWERGRID<br />

continues to wheel about 45% <strong>of</strong> total power generated in<br />

the country through its gigantic transmission network.<br />
