Chapter - 23.2<br />

NATIONAL HYDROELECTRIC POWER<br />

CORPORATION LTD. (NHPC)<br />

NHPC is a Schedule “A” Enterprise <strong>of</strong> the Government <strong>of</strong><br />

India with an Authorized Share Capital <strong>of</strong> Rs. 15,000 Crores<br />

and an Investment base more than Rs. 22,200 Crores.<br />

It was set up in 1975, and now has become the largest<br />

organisation for Hydro <strong>Power</strong> development in India,<br />

with capabilities to undertake all the activities from<br />

conceptualization to commissioning <strong>of</strong> Hydro Projects.<br />

The main objects <strong>of</strong> NHPC includes, to plan, promote<br />

and organize an integrated and efficient development <strong>of</strong><br />

hydroelectric, Wind, Tidal and Geothermal in accordance<br />

with National Economic policy. NHPC has signed a<br />

MOU with Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. (REC)<br />

for formulation and implementation <strong>of</strong> projects under<br />

the programme <strong>of</strong> Accelerated electrification <strong>of</strong> one lakh<br />

villages and one crore households. NHPC has also entered<br />

into an agreement with the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rural Development<br />

for development and maintenance <strong>of</strong> rural access roads<br />

in six districts <strong>of</strong> Bihar under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak<br />

Yojna, a 100% Centrally Sponsored Scheme. Works are in<br />

progress on these schemes.<br />

While first ten <strong>of</strong> the above mentioned projects are in<br />

the ownership <strong>of</strong> the Corporation, Indira Sagar is a Joint<br />

Venture between NHPC and Govt. <strong>of</strong> M.P. with a total<br />

installed capacity <strong>of</strong> 1000 MW from 8 units. Devighat,<br />

Kalpong & Kurichu projects were executed by NHPC on<br />

deposit work/turnkey basis and have been handed over<br />

to the owners.<br />

NHPC has generated 10655.96MUs up to 31.12.2005 and<br />

likely to generate 1582.16 MUs from remaining part <strong>of</strong><br />

financial year 2005-06 (i.e. Jan. 06 to March 06) against<br />

the annual target <strong>of</strong> 11932 MUs. The Capacity Index upto<br />

Dec. ‘05 was 98.71% against the annual target <strong>of</strong> 94.1%<br />

(details in Annex-A).<br />

The Status <strong>of</strong> On Going projects ending December<br />

2005 is given below<br />

1. Dul hasti HE Project (390 MW), J&K<br />

Excavation <strong>of</strong> Head Race Tunnel has been completed on<br />

27.08.03. 8859m (89.04%) HRT Lining has been done<br />

till Dec. 05. The balance lining work <strong>of</strong> HRT including<br />

grouting is expected to be completed by June ’06. All<br />

other works except HRT has already been completed.
