I Chapter - 23.8<br />
TEHRI HYDRO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION LTD.<br />
Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd. (THDC), a<br />
Joint Venture Corporation <strong>of</strong> the Govt. <strong>of</strong> India and Govt.<br />
<strong>of</strong> U.P., was incorporated as a Limited Company under the<br />
Companies Act, 1956, in July’88, to develop, operate and<br />
maintain the Tehri Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Complex and other Hydro<br />
Projects.<br />
THDC is presently responsible for the implementation <strong>of</strong><br />
the Tehri Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Complex (2400 MW), Vishnugad<br />
Pipalkoti (440 MW) and sis other new Hydro Electric<br />
Projects, totaling to an installed capacity <strong>of</strong> 695 MW.<br />
The Corporation has an authorized share capital <strong>of</strong> Rs.<br />
4000 Cr. The cost <strong>of</strong> the Project is being shared in the ratio<br />
<strong>of</strong> 75:25 (equity portion) by Govt. <strong>of</strong> India & Govt. <strong>of</strong> U.P.<br />
for <strong>Power</strong> Component, while Irrigation Component (20% <strong>of</strong><br />
Stage-I cost) is to be entirely funded by the Govt. <strong>of</strong> U.P.<br />
Tehri Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Complex (2400 MW), comprises the<br />
following components:<br />
Tehri Dam & Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Plant (1000MW)<br />
Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project (400 MW)<br />
Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (1000 MW)<br />
The Govt. in March, 1994 approved the implementation<br />
<strong>of</strong> Tehri Dam & HPP (1000 MW) as Stage-I <strong>of</strong> Tehri<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Complex. The Tehri Stage-I Project is currently<br />
at an advanced stage <strong>of</strong> commissioning. The 400 MW<br />
Koteshwar HEP, was approved by Govt. in April, 2000 and<br />
the work is in progress. PIB clearance has been accorded<br />
to Tehri PSP. The project is being processed for investment<br />
decision.<br />
MOU for Vishnu Gad Pipalkoti Project on Alaknanda<br />
river, was signed between THDC and Government <strong>of</strong><br />
Uttaranchal for implementation <strong>of</strong> project in April-2003.<br />
The Feasibility Report has been completed envisaging<br />
an installed capacity <strong>of</strong> 440 MW and CEA has conveyed<br />
the commercial Viability <strong>of</strong> the Project. The preparation <strong>of</strong><br />
DPR <strong>of</strong> project and Stage-II infrastructural activities are<br />
under progress.<br />
Government <strong>of</strong> Uttaranchal (GOU) has allotted six new<br />
Hydro Electric Projects to THDC, totaling to an installed<br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> 695 MW, in Uttaranchal State. Implementation<br />
agreement for these projects have been signed by THDC<br />
with GOU in Nov-05 and Survey & Investigation works for<br />
preparation <strong>of</strong> Feasibility Report has been taken up.<br />
BENEFITS FROM TEHRI HYDRO POWER COMPLEX:<br />
The benefits from the Tehri Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Complex are as<br />
under:<br />
- Addition to the installed generating<br />
capacity in the northern Region : 2400 MW<br />
- Annual energy availability<br />
(Peaking) : 6200 MU<br />
- Irrigation (additional) : 2.70 Lac, ha.<br />
- Stabilisation <strong>of</strong> existing irrigation : 6.04 Lac. Ha.<br />
- 300 Cusecs (162 million gallons per day) <strong>of</strong> drinking<br />
water for Delhi which will meet the requirements <strong>of</strong><br />
about 40 Lac. People.<br />
- In addition, 200 Cusecs (108 million gallons per day) <strong>of</strong><br />
drinking water for towns and villages <strong>of</strong> U.P. which will<br />
meet the requirement <strong>of</strong> 30 Lac. People.<br />
- Integrated development <strong>of</strong> Garhwal region, including<br />
construction <strong>of</strong> a new hill station town with provision <strong>of</strong><br />
all civic facilities; improved communication, education,<br />
health, tourism, development <strong>of</strong> horticulture, fisheries,<br />
and afforestation <strong>of</strong> the region.<br />
1. Tehri Dam & HPP, Stage-I (1000 MW):<br />
Tehri Dam project is a multipurpose Hydro Project under<br />
construction on the river Bhagirathi in Uttaranchal State.<br />
Tehri Hydro <strong>Power</strong> Plant (Stage-I) includes the construction<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 260.5 m high rock fill Dam, Spillway structures,<br />
power tunnels and an underground power house cavern<br />
with an installed capacity <strong>of</strong> 1000 MW (4x250 MW).<br />
STATUS OF THE PROJECT WORKS:<br />
The work <strong>of</strong> Tehri Stage-I Project is nearing completion.<br />
The reservoir impoundment has already started. The<br />
Present status <strong>of</strong> the project works is as under:<br />
A. Main Dam:<br />
The 260.5 m high Tehri Dam, which is the highest earth<br />
& rock fill dam in Asian region, has been raised to its full<br />
height up to level <strong>of</strong> El. 839.5 m. A mammoth quantity<br />
<strong>of</strong> 278.16 Lac Cum <strong>of</strong> fill material has been placed to<br />
complete the Tehri Dam.
