power projects and selling the same to SEBs requiring<br />
power. Turnover <strong>of</strong> the company for the year 2004-05<br />
was Rs.2037.2 crore and pr<strong>of</strong>it after tax Rs.24.0 crore.<br />
NTPC-SAIL <strong>Power</strong> Company Pvt. Limited (NSPCL) is<br />
a joint venture formed by NTPC and SAIL with 50%<br />
equity from both the organizations, in March’01 to<br />
takeover the Captive <strong>Power</strong> Plant (CPP)-II located<br />
at Durgapur & Rourkela Steel Plant having installed<br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> 120 MW each for supplying power to the<br />
respective steel plant on captive basis. The Total<br />
Income <strong>of</strong> NSPCL during 2004-05 was Rs.132.2 Cr.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>it (after tax) <strong>of</strong> the company for the year 2004-05<br />
was Rs.23.3 Cr.<br />
Bhilai Electric Supply Company Private Limited<br />
(BESCL) is another joint venture formed by NTPC &<br />
SAIL with 50% equity from both the organizations, in<br />
March’02 to takeover the Captive <strong>Power</strong> Plant (CPP)-II<br />
located at Bhilai Steel Plant having installed capacity<br />
<strong>of</strong> 74 MW for supplying power to the Bhilai Steel<br />
Plant on captive basis. The Total income <strong>of</strong> BESCL<br />
during 2004-05 was Rs.60.7 Cr. Pr<strong>of</strong>it (after tax) <strong>of</strong> the<br />
company for the year 2004-05 was Rs.6.1 Cr.<br />
NTPC and TNEB have formed a Joint Venture<br />
Company under the name <strong>of</strong> “NTPC Tamil Nadu<br />
Energy Company Ltd”. The company was incorporated<br />
on 23.05.2003 to set up a coal-based power station<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1000 MW capacity, at Ennore, using Ennore port<br />
infrastructure facilities. Site Specific & other studies<br />
have been completed. Feasibility Report (FR) is under<br />
finalization. Coal Linkage/ Coal Mine Allocation and<br />
other key tie-ups/clearances are being pursued.<br />
B) Activities for New Joint Ventures<br />
i) Joint Venture with Railways<br />
NTPC has signed an MOU with <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Railways on 18.02.2002 for setting up power<br />
plant(s) upto 2000 MW capacity to meet the<br />
traction and non-traction power requirements <strong>of</strong><br />
Railways. After studying various sites in India, it<br />
has been decided to setup a 1000 MW (4x250<br />
MW) power plant at Nabinagar, in Bihar. FR for<br />
this project has been prepared. PIB meeting for<br />
the project was held on 13.02.04. Note for CCEA<br />
approval has been prepared by MOP and is now<br />
awaiting clearance from the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Railways.<br />
ii) Takeover <strong>of</strong> Muzaffarpur Thermal <strong>Power</strong><br />
Station (MTPS)<br />
After a series <strong>of</strong> meetings were held with BSEB<br />
and Govt. <strong>of</strong> Bihar (GoB) for the transfer <strong>of</strong> the<br />
MTPS to NTPC on a long-term lease, it was<br />
indicated by GoB in the meeting held on October<br />
2005, that BSEB will not transfer the Station to<br />
MINISTRY OF POWER<br />
NTPC but would form a Joint Venture with NTPC<br />
and operate the Station through JV Company.<br />
Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Agreement (MOA) has been<br />
signed on 26.12.2005 between the Government <strong>of</strong><br />
Bihar, BSEB and NTPC for the takeover <strong>of</strong> MTPS<br />
by a proposed joint venture <strong>of</strong> NTPC and BSEB.<br />
iii) MOU with REC & Agreement with State<br />
Electricity Board<br />
An MoU was signed in between NTPC and REC<br />
to carry out Electrification <strong>of</strong> Rural villages and<br />
households, one Block each in the State <strong>of</strong> West<br />
Bengal and<br />
NTPC is in discussion with Govt <strong>of</strong> Gujarat for allocating<br />
suitable distribution area along with 1000 MW Pipavav<br />
<strong>Power</strong> Project which is likely to be setup in Joint Venture<br />
with Gujarat <strong>Power</strong> Corporation Ltd.<br />
Distribution Area Around NTPC Stations : Korba<br />
Revenue District<br />
To take up distribution area around NTPC Stations, Korba<br />
has been identified as one <strong>of</strong> the Option by setting up<br />
parallel Electrical Distribution network. Feasibility report<br />
prepared for Parallel distribution in Korba Revenue Distt.<br />
Distribution License shall be applied on receipt <strong>of</strong> allocation<br />
<strong>of</strong> power from MOP.<br />
B NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN): NTPC Vidyut<br />
Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NWN) was formed by National<br />
Thermal <strong>Power</strong> Corporation Limited (NTPC), as its<br />
wholly owned subsidiary to cater to and deal with<br />
the vast potential <strong>of</strong> power trading in the country<br />
and optimum capacity utilization. It was incorporated<br />
on 1st November 2002. The Company was granted<br />
category “E” Trading License by Central Electricity<br />
Regulatory Commission (CERC) on 23rd July 2004.<br />
NWN crossed the trading volume <strong>of</strong> 1000 MUs in<br />
October 2004 and moved to category “F” in 2004-05.<br />
NWN transacted business with 17 State Utilities spread<br />
all over the country upto 30.11.05.Major sellers <strong>of</strong><br />
power (GRIDCO/ WBSEB/ DVC/ ASEB/ UPCL) have<br />
resorted to tender and some traders have quoted high<br />
rate, thereby increasing cost <strong>of</strong> power. NWN decided<br />
to refrain from bidding high rate and this decision has<br />
adversely affected trading volume.<br />
An initiative has been taken by NTPC through its<br />
wholly owned subsidiary NWN, to examine various<br />
issues related to the feasibility <strong>of</strong> whole sale <strong>Power</strong><br />
Exchange at National Level in India, which will provide<br />
a transparent and neutral platform for promoting<br />
competition in supply <strong>of</strong> electricity at wholesale level<br />
and thus help development <strong>of</strong> power sector.<br />
