FUTURE LEARNING AS A NATIONAL STRATEGY -<br />

EXPERIENCES IN DEVELOPING EDUCATION<br />

IN FINLAND<br />

inland has been independent country since 1917 and it has<br />

been member of European Union since 1995. Nowadays there is<br />

5,3 million people living in our country and density of population<br />

is quite low, only 17 inhabitants per square kilometers. Like in<br />

many countries main part of population is living in towns. inland<br />

is bi-lingual country. We have two official languages innish (92<br />

%) and Swedish (6 %). Both language groups have rights to get<br />

education in their own language. Immigrants rate is 2,3 % and it is<br />

one of the lowest in Nordic countries. 74,6 % of population aged<br />

25 to 64 have completed upper secondary or tertiary education,<br />

33,4 % have university or other tertiary qualification, which is the<br />

highest percentage in EU (2010).<br />

According to the PISA studies, young inns were among the<br />

best performers in assessment of reading, mathematical and scientific<br />

literacy. inland reaches this top excellent performance of reading<br />

skills among girls. The boys also proved to be the best readers in<br />

OECD countries, although in inland the discrepancy between<br />

girls and boys is the largest within the countries participating in<br />

the study. urthermore, as a result of remedial teaching in inland<br />

the number of pupils performing poorly was lower than in other<br />

OECD countries.<br />

Why education is so important to us?<br />

It is essential to understand that there are four other big<br />

reasons for importance of education. irst of all, education is part<br />

of nation building. It has played in big role when national identity<br />

was formed. And it has always been used in various ways in many<br />

different cases by different actors.<br />

Secondly, education promotes confidence for an individual as<br />

a member of a national and world community in a modern society.<br />

Today our kids and big part of adults are communicating through<br />
