(57) Abstract :<br />

The invention concerns a voltage source converter comprising a plurality <strong>of</strong> switching elements to effectively convert between AC<br />

<strong>and</strong> DC for a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system. The voltage source converter has a bridge (42) having one or more<br />

phase legs comprising <strong>of</strong> switching elements (44) connected between a first DC terminal (52) <strong>and</strong> a second DC terminal (54), in<br />

which each phase leg from the said one or more phase legs comprises an AC terminal provisioned at corresponding midpoint (A,<br />

B, C) <strong>of</strong> said each phase leg to connect with a AC equipment (50). The voltage source converter also has at least one converter leg<br />

(48) comprising <strong>of</strong> switching elements connected between the first <strong>and</strong> the second DC terminals, in which the said at least one<br />

converter leg has a mid point; <strong>and</strong> has at least one switching element (46) from the plurality <strong>of</strong> the switching elements, provided<br />

between the midpoint <strong>of</strong> the said at least one converter leg <strong>and</strong> the mid points <strong>of</strong> the each <strong>of</strong> the phase legs. The method <strong>of</strong><br />

operation <strong>of</strong> the voltage source converter is also provided in the invention. .<br />
