(57) Abstract :<br />

A composite layered ceramic armour material <strong>and</strong> a process for manufacturing the same is disclosed wherein a plurality <strong>of</strong> green<br />

ceramic tapes having a striped layer on one surface formed by graphite strips <strong>and</strong> ceramic strips. The ceramic tapes are stacked<br />

one above the other to form a ceramic stack which is laminated <strong>and</strong> burning <strong>of</strong>f the graphite material in the laminated stack<br />

forming a plurality <strong>of</strong> channels. The stack is then sintered, hardened <strong>and</strong> the channels are infused with a molten polymer resin mix<br />

to form a composite layered armour material. The composite layered ceramic armour material as manufactured by the process <strong>of</strong><br />

the present invention has greater toughness <strong>and</strong> is light weight, less voluminous, cost-effective.<br />
