Commercial fishing is declining i.e. chakkie
industry is technologically outdated and on
the way out. Development of the harbour
area will neither destroy nor sustain the
chakkie industry. Four or three of modern
diesel-driven commercial ski-boats who are
operating in a seemingly financial viable
way at present, may continue to be
accommodated on an equal footing as
dozens of recreational boats launched at
the harbour slipways
I'm definitely sure that the proposed
development is competing with the present
business and the resident's way of living.
Your proposal might promise economic
development, however it could result in the
total and fatal destruction of the existing
balance in Struisbaai.
The socio-economic survey undertaken in
2008 also notes that more than 20% of the
people employed in Ward 5 are employed in
the fishing industry. The current
development could create a friction for the
fishing sector, a fact that was acknowledged
in the economic report. The fishing
activities could create a threat to the
proposed hotel and residential activities due
to fishing smells, noise, times of noise and
parking. The mitigations proposed do not
adequately address how these frictions
could be mitigated. The solution of double
glazing seems naive especially given other
associated impact such as air conditioning
that might result due to its mitigation factor
The disadvantaged will clearly be the
indigenous fisher folk who run the risk of
losing their historic and cultural harbour
when being edged out by luxury yachts, jet
skis and high-powered motor boats for the
up market residents and their guests.
Your point is noted. Please refer to Section
5.2.3 of FEIR
Please refer to Sections 5.2.3 and 5.2.6 of the
FEIR.
Your concern is noted. Please refer to
Sections 5.2.3 and 5.2.6 of the FEIR.
With increased tourism there would inevitably
be an increase in competition for scarce
resources whether the development goes
ahead or not. It would be up to the CAM and
MCM to manage this competition and ensure
that resources are shared equitably as they
relate to the harbour and the coast. Please
note that air conditioning is likely to be
provided irrespective of noise limiting
suggestions. Regarding the responsibility of
the proposed development please refer to
Section 5.2.3 of the FEIR regarding the
forming of a sub-committee.
Please refer to Section 1.4.9 of this Comment
and Response Report. Control of the harbour
remains vested with MCM and the proposed
development will not alter the harbor
infrastructure.
