Du Plessis (171) Grant McKinstry (80) Lindie Snyman (61) Lois Albertyn (109) Lois Albertyn (109) Dirk Kleinschmidt (114) We're also faced with a challenge of whereby more and bigger boats are leaving their original harbours like Gordon‟s Bay, coming to moor their vessels in Struisbaai Harbour each December holiday. They are likely the cause the destruction of the „chukkies‟ and will insist on getting the best place in the harbour because their vessels is of greater financial value. This is happening already. As fishermen, our job is to fish and ensure that we can put food on our tables and cater for our families needs. We are not stupid, but we are fearless. It is unbelievable to state that this development will somehow benefit the local fisher folk and people of Struisbaai. The development does not provide any additional services or facilities for them, and in fact is likely to impede their ability to freely access, and enjoy their harbour. Will interfere and take over the fishing industry – “retail component” What about the fishermen who are depended on fishing for their livelihood? What will happen in the future to fishermen who are dependent on fishing for their livelihoods when considering the fact that only the rich will benefit from the development? Where will fishermen be able to repair their boats? The following issue that raises questions for me is the development‟s impact on commercial fishing, chukkies and the water traffic within the harbour. I am aware that you refer to it, but to me the reference seemed very causal. It cannot be allowed that the fishermen of Struisbaai‟s livelihoods are threatened. Your concern is noted. It would be advisable to raise this concern with MCM to ensure the protection of your rights within the harbor. Please refer to Section 5.2.3 of the FEIR regarding employment opportunities as well as Annexure O: Proponents Vision. The proposed development would not impact on their access. Access is controlled by MCM only. It is however recognised that the fisherfolk may feel alienated. The proposed development would include a fish market and retail component. Please refer to Section 2.4.8 and 5.2.3 i of the FEIR. Please refer to Section 5.2.3 of the FEIR and Section 1.6.15 of this Comment and Response Report. Please refer to Section 1.6.30 of this Comment and Response Report. Applicants response: Current status quo will remain. Please refer to Section 1.6.15 of this Comment and Response Report regarding impact on chakkies and Section 1.5.8 regarding water traffic as well as section 5.2.2 of the FEIR. Newman (149) I can‟t see how the fishing community will benefit from the development. Traditional fishing community – no workable representations to address this issue was made in the draft report. I‟ve had to rely on the sea from a very young age. My ancestors constructed the harbour. I live in Struisbaai. The development of such nature in the harbour would have a negative impact on my livelihood as a fisherman. The harbour is definitely too small and would not be able to cater for such development. I make my living of the sea. Please refer to Section 5.2.3 of the FEIR and Annexure O: Proponent‟s vision Please provide specific concerns that need to be addressed or suggestions to strengthen mitigation measures. Regarding employment please refer to Section 5.2.3 of the FEIR. Regarding impact please refer to Section 1.6.15 of this Comment and Response Report. Your concern is noted. Access to the harbour will not be affected and the responsibility for the harbour remains vested with Marine and Coastal Management. Please refer to Section 1.6.30 of this Comment and Response Report. As the development adjacent to the harbour and within the current boundaries limited impact to harbor functionality is envisaged. Regarding boat repair please refer to Section 1.6.30 of this Comment and Response Report. We are of the opinion that will be able to continue to do so. Access to the harbour will not be affected and the responsibility for the harbour remains vested with Marine and Coastal Management.Please refer to Section 1.6.30 of this Comment and Response Report.
