Freese (91) The harbour should be kept as intact as it is, it the only original harbour left Struisbaai must be left as intact as it is for the benefit of future generation Concerned about the impact that this development would pose on the heritage of the harbour I'm a resident of Struisbaai and the proposed development would spoil the natural beauty of the harbour. The proposed development violates the essential ambiance and historic heritage of Struisbaai which is unique on the South African coast The proposed development should not negatively impact the fishing character and convenience of the harbour. It is unacceptable to use the current public area for the benefits to the proposed development. Nevertheless, it would be necessary to follow a public participation process should the proposed development on erf 848 receive authorization. Struisbaai harbour is one of the only harbours on our coast where there is still access to traditional fishing and its related activities. The proposed development will negatively impact the unspoilt character of the harbour which is one of the last traditional hand-line fisher harbours, it will be destroyed and with it is an irreplaceable cultural asset. I think that the various shareholders in Golden Falls trading should apply their minds to “last remaining link” and come to the realisation that the inhabitants of Struisbaai Noord actually have no other tangible interaction of consequence with where they used to live. They should understand that all that is left of their generational history and interaction with the sea in Struisbaai proper is the harbour. The harbour is their heritage. Your point is noted. Du Plessis (171) Andre Morgenthal (89) Struisbaai prides itself on the character of the town with its fishermen‟s cottages, the working harbour which is one of the oldest in the country) and even Langezandt, which is a perfect example of how development should take place in a controlled fashion with taking into account the town‟s character. The quality of life from Struisbaai and the Fisherman‟s community would be lost due to the proposed development. This unsophisticated historic harbour is not only the town‟s heritage, but we believe it to be of national cultural / historic importance therefore a cultural / historic Impact Assessment in terms of the SAHRA legislation should be fully reported. The harbour should be a National Monument and should not be destroyed by developers to make a profit. There are no more harbours like Struisbaai on the coast, all traditional fishing harbours have been transformed into waterfronts with extinction of heritage. Struisbaai Harbour is the only heritage we have left and changing nor destroying it means that it is the end of the traditional fisher folk of Struisbaai and also of Arniston. Nobody can put a price on a culture, heritage or human lives, but more and more developers are willing to do so. As a regular visitor to Struisbaai, I've got a keen interest in preserving the heritage and the environment of this pristine harbour village. It‟s unique character resonates not only with its permanent residents and other South Africans, but with Cape Agulhas being an international landmark and destination, attracts a steady flow of international tourists. A development like this will detract from the authenticity of the destination. Please refer to Sections 5.2.5 and 5.2.6 of the FEIR, specifically with regard to current architecture. Please refer to Sections 1.6.15 and 1.6.30 of this Comment and Response Report. An independent Heritage assessment was undertaken and no significant heritage was determined.
