Several scholarship opportunities are available for<br />

students attending IU classes in Elkhart or for students<br />

General Information<br />

Professional Development and Lifelong Learning<br />

provides credit and noncredit programs for professional<br />

development and short-term training both on and off<br />

campus. Most programs do not require formal admission<br />

to IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong>. Programs include credit and noncredit<br />

short-term classes, workshops, conferences, online<br />

classes, and customized training and consulting offered<br />

throughout the year with new programs starting weekly.<br />

Most classes and workshops carry nationally recognized<br />

continuing education units (CEUs). These units<br />

document both new skill development for the workplace,<br />

and work completed to meet professional licensure<br />

requirements.<br />

Noncredit professional development classes and<br />

certificates can be found on the professional development<br />

and lifelong learning website. These classes and<br />

certificates do not require admission to the university<br />

and may be started at any time.<br />

Noncredit Certificate Programs<br />

Noncredit certificate programs offer individuals a guided<br />

course of study for professional growth and advancement.<br />

The following programs may be completed in one or<br />

more years of part-time study:<br />

• Human Resource Practitioner<br />

• Non-profit Management<br />

• Computers (Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite,<br />

Web language)<br />

• Production and Inventory Management—offered in<br />

cooperation with the Michiana Chapter of APICS<br />

• Quality Management—offered in cooperation with the<br />

American Society for Quality (ASQ), Michiana Section<br />

• Supervisory Management<br />

Courses and Workshops<br />

Public courses and workshops are offered in the following<br />

areas:<br />

• Communications<br />

• College preparation<br />

• Computer training<br />

• Health professions (continuing education for<br />

nurses, dental hygienists and assistants, pharmacy<br />

technician training, medical terminology, coding and<br />

transcription)<br />

• Languages<br />

• Professional certificate examination prep courses<br />

(CPIM, CSPC, SPHR, PHR, ASQ, CMA)<br />

• Real estate prelicensing<br />

• Test preparation (SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT)<br />

• Institute of Reading Development<br />

Conferences<br />

Each spring, the Division of Extended Learning Services<br />

co-sponsors the Early Childhood Conference at IU <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Bend</strong> in partnership with the School of Education and<br />

other community-based partners.<br />

Business and Industry Services<br />

Continuing education provides training and consulting<br />

services for business, industry, and other communitybased<br />

organizations. Principal program areas are:<br />

• Business communication<br />

• Supervision and management<br />

• Computers<br />

• Quality management<br />

• Spanish/English for speakers of other languages<br />

Credit Certificate Programs<br />

Paralegal Studies Program<br />

The Paralegal Studies Program was developed in 1980<br />

by continuing education with the assistance of IU<br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong> faculty members and an advisory board of<br />

area attorneys. This part-time, evening, 25 credit hour<br />

interdisciplinary program incorporates courses from the<br />

School of Business and Economics and the College of<br />

Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students begin the program in<br />

the fall semester. Courses are arranged sequentially and<br />

are offered only once each year. The program is usually<br />

completed in two and one-half years. Contact conted@<br />
