Internship/Practicum Program<br />

Up to 3 credit hours of practicum/internship credit<br />

may be awarded to a student engaged in an off-campus<br />

internship or professional work experience. Students<br />

generally arrange their own internships/practica<br />

and work with an advisor to determine the academic<br />

requirements for obtaining credit. Internships/practica<br />

must be approved by a faculty advisor.<br />

Certificate Programs<br />

The Public Affairs graduate certificate is a 15 credit hour<br />

(five courses) program designed for individuals who<br />

want a short course in management, as in the following<br />

examples:<br />

• Those in public and community or health care<br />

organizations or agencies who wish to supplement<br />

their primary fields of professional or technical<br />

expertise.<br />

• People changing from professional or technical roles<br />

to managerial roles in their organizations.<br />

• Career employees of public and community agencies<br />

or health care organizations interested in studying<br />

about public or health care management.<br />

Admission Requirements, Application<br />

Procedures, and Academic Standing<br />

To apply to a certificate program, applicants must meet<br />

the same eligibility requirements as applicants seeking<br />

admission to the M.P.A. degree program. Applicants also<br />

must follow the same application procedures as those for<br />

the M.P.A. degree program. The rules for maintaining<br />

good academic standing in the M.P.A. degree program<br />

also apply to the certificate program.<br />

Supplemental Programs<br />

Social Studies<br />

IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong>, in conjunction with <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Bloomington, offers courses that may be used as credit for<br />

the degree Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) in the field<br />

of social studies. The program is designed primarily for<br />

teachers in secondary education but is applicable also to<br />

elementary and community college teaching. Individuals<br />

with an undergraduate degree in history or the social<br />

sciences may pursue this degree and teacher certification<br />

concurrently.<br />

The M.A.T. in social studies degree program permits<br />

concentration in subject areas while advancing the<br />

student’s teaching skills. The degree requires a total of
