Students pursuing the master’s degree in voice will take<br />

additional placement examinations in Italian, French,<br />

German, and Latin diction.<br />

Minimum GPA and Dismissal GPA for Master of Music<br />

Graduate music students whose CGPA falls below 3.0 are<br />

placed on academic probation for one semester. If one’s<br />

GPA is not raised to the 3.0 level, the student may be<br />

placed on additional probation, or dismissed from the<br />

program. Any time one’s GPA falls below 2.0, automatic<br />

dismissal takes place.<br />

Curriculum<br />

The Master of Music curriculum is 36 credit hours total,<br />

not counting remedial music nor English courses, nor<br />

major ensemble credit hours.<br />

(All courses are 3 credit hours, unless otherwise designated.)<br />

Applied Music Courses (12 cr.)<br />

Principal instrument or composition for four<br />

semesters: 800-level (graduate minor level, Master of<br />

Music in studio teaching students only) or 900-level<br />

(graduate major) (3-3-3-3 cr.)<br />

MUS-I 711 Masters Recital (0 cr.)<br />

One required outreach activity<br />

Note: With the approval of the graduate music faculty, a<br />

student may substitute a formal thesis, including an oral<br />

defense, for MUS-I 711 Masters Recital.<br />

Core Music Courses (6 cr.)<br />

MUS-M 530 Contemporary Music (by<br />

recommendation of the advisor,<br />

another course may be substituted<br />

if this course was taken in the<br />

undergraduate degree.)<br />

Students using the Master of Music in studio teaching<br />

concentration should expect to use business and/or<br />

education courses to satisfy at least 9 credit hours of the<br />

cognate requirement.<br />

Additional Requirements<br />

Ensemble<br />

Three semesters of participation in a major ensemble.<br />

Piano Proficiency<br />

Successful completion of the keyboard proficiency<br />

examination. A student may attempt the piano<br />

proficiency at any time during the degree program, but<br />

this examination must be completed before the graduate<br />

recital. Students who pass the keyboard skills placements<br />

will satisfy the requirement of piano proficiency.
