History of black Americans beginning<br />

with their West African background<br />

and including the slave trade, slavery,<br />

AFRICAN American History II (3 cr.)<br />

Study of segregation, black subculture,<br />

ideological and tactical dissension,<br />

economic marginality, urbanization, and<br />

the impact of the civil rights movement.<br />

History of <strong>Indiana</strong> I (3 cr.)<br />

The development of a midwestern state;<br />

with emphasis upon the French and<br />

British periods; the West in the American<br />

AMERICAN HISTORY THROUGH FILM (3 CR.)<br />

This course will analyze films about<br />

America since 1865. The movies will be<br />

representative of a particular historical<br />

period or they will provide a commentary<br />

on a specific issue. Both forms will provide<br />

a gateway to how Americans have come to<br />

think about their own history.<br />

9/11 AND ITS AFTERMATH (3 CR.)<br />

This course will examine recent American<br />

history in detail. We will consider why<br />

9/11 occurred, its impact upon American<br />

society and politics, and its relationship<br />

to the current wars in Afghanistan and<br />

Iraq. We will also examine the variety<br />

of ways America has changed because of<br />

these momentous events.<br />

THE VIETNAM WAR (3 cr.)<br />

The story of America’s longest war—the<br />

battles, the protests, the movies, and the<br />

controversies. The Vietnam War was an<br />

epic event, the climax of the Cold War, and<br />

the high-water mark of American power.<br />

The course also deals with the war’s<br />

legacies, its place in popular culture, and<br />

its economic and political aftershocks.<br />

WOMEN, MEN, AND SOCIETY IN MODERN<br />

EUROPE (3 cr.)<br />

An overview of the development of<br />

gender roles in Europe since the French<br />

Revolution. Examines the implications of<br />

industrialization for the modern family<br />

and for the creation of private and public<br />

WOMEN IN MEDIEVAL SOCIETY (3 cr.)<br />

An overview of the history of women<br />

in the Medieval west. The situation<br />

of women is addressed according to<br />

their position in society—whether it be<br />

noblewoman, queen, peasant, saint, or<br />

prostitute. Both primary and secondary<br />

sources are examined. Attention is<br />

also paid to Medieval theories about<br />

women and prevailing attitudes toward<br />

women, as expressed in both learned<br />

and popular circles. Methodological and<br />

epistemological problems are highlighted.<br />

THE CRUSADES (3 cr.)<br />

Military expeditions undertaken by<br />

Christians to recover the Holy Land<br />

between 1095 and 1291. It explores the<br />

concept of holy war, Church reform, the<br />

military campaigns, the crusades ideal,<br />

the crusaders’’ motivations, women’s<br />

involvement, life in the crusader states,<br />

and cultural exchanges between Muslims,<br />

Christians, and Jews.<br />

middle ages (3 cr.)<br />

Late Medieval Europe between 1000 and<br />

1500 C.E. Covers political, economic, social,<br />

religious, and cultural changes. Includes<br />

religious reform, colonization, especially<br />

the Crusades and the beginning of<br />

exploration, the treatment of non-Christian<br />

peoples, the creation of a centralized state,<br />

cultural movements, and gender.<br />

Europe in the twentieth century i (3 cr.)<br />

An examination of European political,<br />

social, economic, and cultural<br />

developments in the first half of the<br />

twentieth century. Emphasis is placed on<br />

the social effects of the World Wars, the<br />

Holocaust, the crisis of liberal democracy,<br />

the rise of communism and fascism, and<br />

the interactions of Christian Europe with<br />

other cultures and societies.
