The minor focuses on the studies of East Asia, its<br />

cultures, societies, histories, and languages, as well as<br />

on the experiences of people from the United States<br />

and their descendants from the East Asian regions.<br />

East Asia mainly consists of China, Japan, Korea, and<br />

Vietnam, and the bordering areas in Asia and the Pacific.<br />

The approach is interdisciplinary, combining a variety<br />

of fields including history, language, media and gender<br />

studies, political science, sociology, and anthropology.<br />

MINOR IN East Asian Studies<br />

(All courses are 3 credit hours, unless otherwise designated.<br />

These courses may require additional time for viewing films.)<br />

All course work for the minor must be planned with an<br />

advisor from the East Asian Studies minor faculty. To<br />

preserve the minor’s interdisciplinary focus, courses<br />

must be drawn from at least two different departments.<br />

Courses should also represent a student’s range of study<br />

beyond one national framework.<br />

Concentration Requirements (15 cr.)<br />

One 400-level course with East Asian Studies focus;<br />

or 300-level course with East Asian Studies focus with<br />

an additional research or term paper requirement; or<br />

independent study; or study abroad (3 cr.)<br />
