Additional Army ROTC Curriculum<br />

Professional Military Education Requirements<br />

In addition to the military science requirements outlined<br />

above, Army ROTC scholarship students are required<br />

to complete other specified university courses. These<br />

additional requirements are taken as a part of the student’s<br />

field of study or as degree electives, depending upon the<br />

college in which the student is enrolled. Students are<br />

notified of such requirements prior to joining the Army<br />

ROTC Program, and as part of the ROTC orientation.<br />

An approved list of courses that meet the professional<br />

military education requirement is available.<br />

Student Organizations and Activities<br />

All Army ROTC students have the opportunity to<br />

participate in a variety of activities, to include drill team,<br />

ranger challenge team, color guard; and the ‘Shamrock’,<br />

the Fightin’ Irish Battalion’s newsletter and web page.<br />

Army ROTC students also have the opportunity to<br />

attend Airborne School, Air Assault School, Northern<br />

Warfare School, and Mountain Warfare School during<br />

the summer break.<br />

Student AWARDS and Prizes<br />

The Dixon Award<br />

A $200 cash award, presented to an outstanding senior<br />

who has displayed exceptional performance during the<br />

annual Dixon Challenge.<br />

Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Sword<br />

An Army officer’s sword, presented annually to the<br />

battalion’s cadet commander.<br />

Patrick Haley Award<br />

A Notre Dame gold wristwatch, presented annually to<br />

the cadet who attains the highest academic grade point<br />

average.<br />

Col. William T. Brooks Award<br />

A pair of boots and a plaque, given to the Ranger company<br />

commander during the past academic year.<br />

Dr. Michael McKee Award<br />

A $100 cash award, presented each year to the<br />

outstanding member of the battalion’s drill team and/<br />

or honor guard.<br />

physical qualities to serve successfully as officers in<br />

the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The NROTC<br />

Program fills a vital need in preparing mature young<br />

men and women for leadership and management in an<br />

increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps. Nursing<br />

scholarships are available for students participating in<br />

the IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong> Nursing Program. Depending upon<br />

the student’s status (scholarship or non-scholarship)<br />

and their goals, certain courses regularly offered by other<br />

university departments are required.<br />

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)<br />

is an educational program designed to give men and<br />

women the opportunity to become an Air Force officer<br />

while completing a degree. The Air Force ROTC Program<br />

develops the leadership and management skills students<br />

need to become leaders in the twenty-first century. In<br />

return for challenging and rewarding work, we offer the<br />

opportunity for advancement, education and training,<br />

and the sense of pride that comes from serving our<br />

country. Upon completion of the Air Force ROTC Program<br />

students are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the<br />

Air Force. Following commissioning, there are excellent<br />

opportunities for additional education in a wide variety<br />

of academic fields. Our mission: To produce leaders for<br />

the Air Force and build better citizens for America.<br />

Student Organizations and Activities<br />

The Air Force ROTC Program offers many opportunities<br />

for leadership and personal development. Cadets have<br />

the opportunity to participate in the Arnold Air Society<br />

Program, which has won Notre Dame Service Awards.<br />

Notre Dame has recognized the great contributions of this<br />

service organization several times in the past few years.<br />

Also, cadets have the chance to receive orientation flights<br />

through our affiliation with Civil Air Patrol. With base<br />

visits, hosting the Flyin’ Irish basketball tournament,<br />

writing articles for our Skywriting newspaper and the<br />

Air Force ROTC Leader magazine, our cadets maintain<br />

a busy schedule while increasing their leadership and<br />

communications ability.<br />
