Steps to Starting Classes at IU<br />

<strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong><br />

Follow these steps to your first day of classes and a great<br />

future at IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong>.<br />

1. Submit your admission application to the Office of<br />

Admissions and be admitted to IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong>. Visit<br />

www.apply.iusb.edu for details on this process.<br />

2. Activate your student e-mail account and set up<br />

OneStart, a personalized portal to over 1,000 pages<br />

of information and services available to students. Go<br />

to https://onestart.iu.edu to access your e-mail,<br />

Oncourse, Schedule of Classes, and other features to<br />

manage your academic life.<br />

3. Take placement examinations. These examinations<br />

help identify the most appropriate classes for you<br />

to take in your first semester. Visit www.iusb.<br />

edu/~sbexams to view available examination dates.<br />

Refer to your admissions package regarding waivers<br />

for these examinations.<br />

4. Attend a mandatory orientation, meet with an<br />

academic advisor, and register for classes. It is a great<br />

opportunity to meet other students and faculty. Visit<br />

www.iusb.edu/~sborient for available dates and<br />

times.<br />

• Meet with your academic advisor to select your class<br />

schedule.<br />

• Register for classes. Go to the OneStart web page,<br />

https://onestart.iu.edu and click the login button,<br />

or register in person at the Gateway Information<br />

Center, located in the Administration Building lobby.<br />

See the Schedule of Classes for a list of available<br />

courses.<br />

• Get a student ID. Call the Gateway Information<br />

Center at (574) 520-4135 for more information.<br />

5. Make arrangements for your tuition payment.<br />

• Contact the Office of the Bursar at (574) 520-5526,<br />

visit www.iusb.edu/~bursarsb, or see page 13 of<br />

this publication to review deferment plan options.<br />

• To review a list of available scholarships, go to www.<br />

iusb.edu/~scholar1 or call (574) 520-4483.<br />

• To apply for financial aid, you must complete the<br />

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).<br />

Call the Office of Financial Aid at (574) 520-4357<br />

or go to www.iusb.edu/~sbfinaid if you have<br />

questions.<br />

6. Buy your books. Textbooks are available in the<br />

bookstore three weeks prior to the start of the<br />

semester. Call the bookstore at (574) 520-4309 for<br />

their business hours. Elkhart textbooks are sold at the<br />

Elkhart Center; call the Elkhart Center for book sale<br />

hours at (574) 520-4000.<br />

7. Attend classes. See the Schedule of Classes for start<br />

dates, final examination dates, and other important<br />

semester dates.<br />

This one-stop student service center provides easily<br />

accessible student support services for admissions,<br />

financial aid, student scholarships, academic support<br />

programs, career and internship programs, the bursar,<br />

parking, housing, and registration. Staff and student<br />

helpers are available to assist with navigating the<br />

OneStart and Oncourse Web-based tools. Quality<br />

service is marked by friendly and caring interactions to<br />

determine the nature of concerns, needs, or problems,<br />

and by prompt, accurate attention to those concerns.<br />

Staff members can walk through problems to a solution.<br />

If an on-the-spot solution is not possible, staff members<br />

will refer students to an expert who is usually able to<br />

meet with them immediately. Staff also help students<br />

make contact with other units across the university. Just<br />

talk to a staff person in the Gateway Information Center<br />
