competency by completing the Radiology Laboratory<br />
Validation Test. If the student fails to pass the validation<br />
test, they are required to enroll in DHYG-H 305<br />
Radiology Clinic I.<br />
Validation Policies<br />
In the event the student fails the validation clinical<br />
course, the student is dismissed from the program.<br />
Step 3: Reinstatement<br />
Upon successful demonstration of academic and clinical<br />
competencies within the designated time, the student is<br />
reinstated into the Dental Hygiene degree program. The<br />
student may reenroll in the sequential course when it is<br />
offered in the curriculum.<br />
Transfer Credit Hours<br />
Transfers between <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>University</strong> Campuses<br />
Dental Hygiene students in good academic standing<br />
at another <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>University</strong> campus may seek<br />
intercampus transfer. Students seeking intercampus<br />
transfer must meet the academic policies of the IU<br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong> program. Intercampus transfer requests<br />
are evaluated individually on the basis of clinical space<br />
available and a review of student records.<br />
Transfers from Non-<strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>University</strong> Dental Hygiene<br />
Degree Programs<br />
Dental Hygiene students in good academic standing at<br />
another university who wish to transfer should contact<br />
the director of the IU <strong>South</strong> <strong>Bend</strong> Dental Hygiene degree<br />
program. The director of dental hygiene evaluates Dental<br />
Hygiene courses completed at another university for<br />
transfer equivalency and student placement. All other<br />
transfer policies must be followed.<br />
Five-Year Limit<br />
Required science courses must be completed within five<br />
years prior to the beginning of Dental Hygiene course<br />
work.<br />
Course Exemptions<br />
Students meeting the specific criteria may test out of<br />
DHYG-H 305 Radiology Clinic I and DHYG-H 308<br />
Dental Materials. Applications for course exemptions<br />
are in the clinic manual.<br />
DHYG-H 305 Radiology Clinic I Exemption<br />
To be eligible to test out, students must have a current:<br />
• State radiology certificate; or<br />
• Certificate in Dental Assisting (CDA)<br />
Procedures<br />
Students must:<br />
• Submit an application to course instructor no later<br />
than November 1<br />
• Make arrangements with course instructor to take<br />
the written and clinical tests once the application is<br />
approved<br />
• Submit radiographs to instructor by December 1<br />
• Take the test no later than December 1<br />
• Successfully pass both the written and clinical<br />
examination with a grade of 75 percent or higher<br />
Radiology Written Validation Test<br />
• The written radiology validation examination is an<br />
objective test that evaluates the student’s knowledge<br />
of radiographic policies and procedures as outlined in<br />
the Dental Hygiene clinic manual.<br />
Radiology Laboratory Validation Test<br />
• Expose, develop, mount, and evaluate FMX films of<br />
the right side of mouth using paralleling technique<br />
and develop in AFP using DXTTR.<br />
• Expose, develop, mount, and evaluate FMX films of<br />
the left side of mouth using bisecting technique and<br />
develop in AFP using DXTTR.<br />
• Four retakes are allowed for the entire FMX survey.<br />
• Films are graded according to DHYG-H 305 Radiology<br />
Clinic I criteria and must be completed at passing level.<br />
DHYG-H 308 Dental Materials Exemption<br />
To be eligible to test out of DHYG-H 308 Dental<br />
Materials, the student must have:<br />
• Graduated from an accredited Dental Assisting degree<br />
program within the last 5 years or<br />
• A current certificate in Dental Assisting (CDA)<br />
Procedures<br />
Students must:<br />
• Submit an application to course instructor no later<br />
than November 1<br />
• Make arrangements with course instructor to take a<br />
test once application is approved<br />
• Take the test no later than December 1<br />
• Successfully pass with a score 80 percent or higher on<br />
a written examination<br />
DHYG-H 308 Dental Materials Test<br />
• Students may contact the course instructor for a copy<br />
of DHYG-H 308 Dental Materials objectives<br />
Associate of Science in Dental<br />
Hygiene (90 cr.)<br />
The first year of study for the Associate of Science in<br />
Dental Hygiene degree consists of general-education and<br />
biomedical courses which serve as the foundation of the<br />
dental hygiene curriculum and represent a knowledge<br />
base for the profession. The second two years incorporate<br />
courses in dental and dental hygiene sciences and<br />
provide the theoretical and clinical framework of dental<br />
hygiene practice.
