emancipation of the serfs, Russo-Japanese<br />

feudalism, unification, and the Tokugawa<br />

settlement after 1600. Encounter with<br />

European civilization, closed country.<br />

Urbanization, social and cultural change,<br />

rise of agrarian prosperity in the Edo<br />

period to about 1800. Credit given for<br />

only one of HIST-G 358 or HIST-G 468.<br />

modern japan (3 cr.)<br />

Western impact and social and intellectual<br />

change in late Tokugama Japan from<br />

about 1720. The Meiji Restoration. State<br />

capitalism and the Japanese development<br />

process. Empire, war, defeat, United<br />

States occupation and renewal in the<br />

twentieth century, social and economic<br />

structures, religious systems, gender,<br />

science and art, and Korea’s interaction<br />

with its East Asian neighbors.<br />
