An ethnographic survey of a selected<br />
culture area or ethnic group. May not be<br />

Intermediate survey of theories<br />
and problems in social and cultural<br />
anthropology. Historical development,<br />
methods of inquiry, focal problems, and<br />
contemporary theoretical perspectives.<br />
MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3 CR.)<br />
Introductory overview of the major<br />
theory, methods and scope of medical<br />
anthropology. Topics include politicaleconomic<br />
perspectives on health and<br />
healing, ethnomedicine, medical ecology,<br />
health problems research, medical<br />
pluralism, and the analysis of health<br />
delivery systems. This course explores<br />
these issues in both the developed and<br />
developing countries.<br />
Introduction to the cultures of<br />
Africa (3 cr.)<br />
Explores the vitality and diversity of<br />
African cultures today in communities<br />
ranging from town neighborhoods to<br />
remote villages and from desert to rain<br />
forest. Demonstrates the tenacity and<br />
creativity of human societies facing severe<br />
political, social, and ecological pressures,<br />
but also contributes new questions and<br />
answers to global debates about family<br />
values, ethnicity, terrorism, hunger, and<br />
economic growth.<br />

Ethnographic survey of culture areas<br />
from the Arctic to Panama plus crosscultural<br />
analysis of interrelations of<br />
culture, geographical environment, and<br />
language families.<br />

Surveys modern Indian groups, peasant<br />
societies, problems of acculturation, and<br />
urbanization in contemporary Mexico.<br />
Indians of <strong>Indiana</strong> (3 cr.)<br />
Indians of <strong>Indiana</strong> provides an<br />
introduction to the histories, languages,<br />
and cultures of the Native American<br />
Nations of <strong>Indiana</strong>, focusing in particular<br />
on the Miami, the Potawatomi, and<br />
the Shawnee. The course takes an<br />
ethnohistorical approach, seeking to<br />
understand the past and present of<br />

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS OF<br />
MESOAMERICA (3 cr.)<br />
Historical ethnography of the major pre-<br />
Columbian civilizations, especially the<br />
Aztec, the Maya, and the Zapotec, and<br />
the Mixtec. Emphasis on the social life,<br />
cultural achievements, religion, world<br />
view, and political systems to illustrate<br />
the diversity and richness of Amerindian<br />
life before the Spanish conquest.<br />
women and power (3 cr.)<br />
Cross-cultural examination of different<br />
forms and systems of power in women’s<br />
experiences. Topics include: power and<br />
dominance, motherhood as power, power<br />
and ordinary women’s lives, women’s<br />
experiences of colonialism, women as<br />
revolutionaries, women in the labor<br />
market, and women in international<br />
politics.<br />
Urban Anthropology (3 cr.)<br />
An examination of urban social<br />
organization in cross-cultural perspective,<br />
including theoretical perspectives on<br />
urbanization, kinship and social networks,<br />
economic and political factors, and cultural<br />
pluralism. Strategies of anthropological<br />
research in urban settings.<br />
APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY (3 CR.)<br />
Survey of the applications of<br />
anthropological theory and method<br />
to meet societal needs in the areas<br />
of education, health, industry, food<br />
production, and rural development.<br />

This course explores the nature of<br />
women’s roles in developing countries.<br />
Particular emphasis is placed on<br />
examining how development and cultural<br />
change affect the lives of women.<br />

Seminar through which students explore<br />
recent discussions within the discipline<br />
about the purpose and meaning of<br />
anthropological writing through reading<br />
different styles of ethnographic writing and<br />
through conducting ethnographic research<br />
themselves and writing up the results using<br />
