4.7 <strong>City</strong> Council shall endeavour to,<br />

(a) maintain an interconnected system <strong>of</strong><br />

sidewalks and walkways within the urban<br />

area; and<br />

(b) pursue and maintain an interconnected<br />

system <strong>of</strong> trails and bikeways within the<br />

urban and rural areas, consistent with the<br />

approved <strong>Pickering</strong> Trails and Bikeway<br />

Master <strong>Plan</strong>, including connections to the<br />

Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, the Seaton<br />

Hiking Trail, the Oak Ridges Moraine, the<br />

Downtown Core, the GO Transit station,<br />

abutting municipalities and other important<br />

destinations.<br />

private automobiles needs<br />

to be reduced in favour <strong>of</strong><br />

other modes <strong>of</strong> travel,<br />

4.8 <strong>City</strong> Council shall consider the needs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

physically challenged in the design and<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> its transportation system.<br />

4.9 <strong>City</strong> Council shall consider the following as<br />

priority connections, and shall endeavour to<br />

ensure their early implementation,<br />

(a) a continuous <strong>Pickering</strong> Waterfront Trail<br />

adjacent, wherever feasible, to Lake<br />

Ontario, as part <strong>of</strong> the Lake Ontario<br />

Waterfront Trail system;<br />

(b) a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over<br />

Highway 401 linking the Downtown Core<br />

and the GO Transit Station; and<br />

(c) a continuous bikeway across <strong>Pickering</strong><br />

along the south side <strong>of</strong> the proposed<br />

Highway 407/Transitway.<br />
