Principle 2: To become<br />

more self-sufficient while<br />

seeking broader<br />

connections.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> must become more complete and self-sufficient.<br />

Yet, it must also recognize, respect and nurture broader<br />

connections with others, in time and space. Increasingly, it<br />

must think globally while acting locally. To do this<br />

requires:<br />

a more holistic “systems” view <strong>of</strong> the world, one<br />

that accepts that our needs have to be balanced<br />

against the needs <strong>of</strong> others, including future<br />

generations;<br />

enhancing local economic opportunities while<br />

supporting and seeking out responsible economic<br />

activities and investments;<br />

providing local cultural, leisure and other<br />

opportunities that complement and support<br />

regional objectives and interests;<br />

involving members <strong>of</strong> the community in local<br />

planning and decision-making, as well as seeking<br />

out and considering the interests, ideas and<br />

concerns <strong>of</strong> others outside the community;<br />

establishing a clear “sense <strong>of</strong> place” that instills in<br />

people a feeling <strong>of</strong> community pride; and<br />
