Heritage Education<br />

and Promotion Policies (cont’d)<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> important cultural<br />

heritage structures in <strong>Pickering</strong><br />

include:<br />

the individually designated<br />

properties in the <strong>City</strong><br />

the Bentley House in<br />

Brougham<br />

Brougham Hall<br />

the Claremont library<br />

building<br />

the <strong>City</strong>’s churches and<br />

cemeteries<br />

(ii) supporting Heritage Week, and<br />

other community, regional and<br />

provincial activities involving<br />

cultural heritage activities;<br />

(iii) establishing urban and rural<br />

heritage trails and promoting<br />

heritage walking tours;<br />

(iv) identifying scenic roads and<br />

promoting scenic driving tours;<br />

(v) recognizing and commemorating<br />

designated heritage buildings,<br />

structures, sites and landscapes;<br />

and<br />

(vi) recognizing, with plaques and/or<br />

certificates, buildings <strong>of</strong><br />

outstanding heritage value, and<br />

people involved in heritage<br />

restoration and conservation; and<br />

(b) support and promote the <strong>Pickering</strong><br />

Museum Village.<br />

CITY POLICY<br />

Heritage Master <strong>Plan</strong><br />

8.6 <strong>City</strong> Council, in association with its<br />

heritage committee, shall prepare a<br />

municipal heritage master plan that<br />

identifies cultural heritage resources and<br />

outlines programs and strategies to<br />

protect, interpret and responsibly use<br />

cultural heritage resources.<br />

Cultural Heritage Inventory<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the important areas in<br />

<strong>Pickering</strong> having cultural<br />

heritage value include:<br />

the Whitevale Heritage<br />

Conservation District<br />

the <strong>City</strong>’s rural hamlets<br />

<strong>Pickering</strong> Museum Village<br />

the Oak Ridges Moraine<br />

river valleys<br />

the Former Lake Ontario<br />

Shoreline<br />

Frenchman’s Bay and area<br />

views from Whitevale<br />

Road and other scenic<br />

roads<br />

8.7 <strong>City</strong> Council, in association with its<br />

heritage committee, shall<br />

(a) conduct an inventory <strong>of</strong> heritage<br />

resources owned by the <strong>City</strong>, its<br />

boards and commissions, and<br />

establish an overall program for the<br />

maintenance, use, reuse or, if<br />

warranted, disposal <strong>of</strong> these resources;<br />

(b) maintain an inventory <strong>of</strong> heritage<br />

resources designated or worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

designation under the Ontario<br />

Heritage Act; and<br />

(c) store and disseminate cultural heritage<br />

resource inventories and data-bases in<br />

convenient and publicly accessible<br />

locations and formats, and maintain<br />

an archive <strong>of</strong> heritage conservation<br />

information.<br />
