(d) shall recognize that the primary purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

the Oak Ridges Moraine Natural Core Areas<br />

is to maintain and where possible, improve or<br />

restore the ecological integrity <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Moraine, and where possible, improve or<br />

restore the health, diversity and size <strong>of</strong> key<br />

natural heritage features, hydrologically<br />

sensitive features and the related ecological<br />

functions;<br />

(e) shall recognize that additional purposes and<br />

objectives for the Oak Ridges Moraine<br />

Natural Core Areas are also found in Sections<br />

11(1) and (2) <strong>of</strong> the Oak Ridges Moraine<br />

Conservation <strong>Plan</strong>;<br />

(f) within the Oak Ridges Moraine Natural Core<br />

Areas,<br />

(i) every application for development or<br />

site alteration shall require permitted<br />

uses to be compatible with their<br />

surroundings and shall be subject to<br />

the Oak Ridges Moraine policies as set<br />

out in Chapter Fifteen; and<br />

(ii) shall require studies in accordance with<br />

the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation<br />

<strong>Plan</strong> to support applications for<br />

development or site alteration, which<br />

identify planning, design and<br />

construction practices that ensure that<br />

no buildings or other site alterations<br />

impede the movement <strong>of</strong> plants and<br />

animals among key natural heritage<br />

features, hydrologically sensitive<br />

features and adjacent lands within<br />

Natural Core Areas and Natural<br />

Linkage Areas;<br />

(g) shall recognize as Oak Ridges Moraine<br />

Natural Linkage Areas on Schedule I, in<br />

accordance with the Oak Ridges Moraine<br />

Conservation <strong>Plan</strong>, lands identified as<br />

being part <strong>of</strong> a regional-scale open space<br />

corridor system that support or have the<br />

potential to support the movement <strong>of</strong><br />

plants and animals among the Natural<br />

Core Areas, river valleys and stream<br />

corridors;<br />

“Ecological Integrity”,<br />

which includes hydrological<br />

integrity, means the<br />

condition <strong>of</strong> the ecosystems<br />

in which:<br />

(i) the structure,<br />

composition and function <strong>of</strong><br />

the ecosystems are<br />

unimpaired by stresses from<br />

human activity;<br />

(ii) natural ecological<br />

processes are intact and<br />

self-sustaining; and<br />

(iii) the ecosystems evolve<br />

naturally.<br />
